About Saint Dominic the Abbot Sora

Every August 22nd, the Basilica of Saint Dominic the Abbot in Sora, in the province of Frosinone, celebrates the founder of the thousand-year-old abbey built at the confluence of the Liri and Fibreno rivers. The solemnity combines morning masses, the eve's evening procession with the saint's image, and the kissing of the relics with popular festivities: food stalls in the parish square, a charity raffle, and the traditional market of goods and animals along Via Barca San Domenico.

A thousand-year-old festival in the heart of Ciociaria

Every August 22nd, Sora, a town in the province of Frosinone in southern Lazio, celebrates Saint Dominic the Abbot in the basilica that houses his remains. The summer solemnity commemorates the dedication of the abbey to its founding saint: in 1104, Pope Paschal II visited the monastery, which until then had been dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and consecrated it to the memory of Dominic. For over nine centuries, the Sora community has renewed this appointment, which complements the major winter patronal feast on January 21st and 22nd.

Saint Dominic of Sora, the saintly abbot

Born in Foligno in 951, Dominic was a Benedictine monk and a tireless reformer of monastic life between the 10th and 11th centuries. In 1011, at the behest of the governor of Sora and Arpino, Pietro di Rainiero, and his wife Doda, he founded the monastery at the confluence of the Liri and Fibreno rivers where he died in 1031 and where he still rests today in the basilica's crypt. The famous Abbey of Casamari was also born from his community in 1036: it is no coincidence that it is traditionally the abbot of Casamari who presides over the solemn mass of the festival.

The Romanesque basilica at the confluence of the Liri and Fibreno

The Abbey of Saint Dominic, elevated to the dignity of a minor basilica on February 12, 2011, is one of the most significant Romanesque monuments in southern Lazio: a Latin cross plan with three naves, semicircular apses, and a presbytery raised above the underground crypt. Destroyed by Frederick II in 1229 and rebuilt several times, the abbey has spanned a thousand years of history, remaining the spiritual heart of the middle Liri valley.

The religious program

On the evening of the eve, August 21st, the image of the saint is carried in procession by a crowd of faithful and pilgrims, many of whom come from neighboring towns. On August 22nd, the basilica hosts five masses throughout the day; the solemn mid-morning concelebration is presided over by the abbot of Casamari. The festival concludes with the evening mass and the kissing of the relics of Saint Dominic, the moment most awaited and deeply felt by the devotees.

Market, food stalls, and solidarity

Alongside the religious rites, the festival preserves an authentic popular soul. Along Via Barca San Domenico, the traditional market of goods and animals of all kinds takes place, while food stalls featuring the flavors of Ciociaria are set up in the parish square. The community's youth organize a charity raffle whose proceeds support charitable works and parish activities: a concrete way to make the festival an occasion for solidarity.

Sora and the cult of Saint Dominic

Saint Dominic the Abbot is the patron saint of Sora, and his cult radiates far beyond the Liri valley: from Cocullo to Villalago, in Abruzzo, numerous towns venerate him as a protector. The Municipality of Sora participates in the celebrations, and the August festival is also an excellent opportunity to discover the city, the springs of the Fibreno, and the historical and natural heritage of the middle Liri valley, in the Lazio Region.
