About Macchina dell'Assunta

Every August 14th, as dusk falls, Sora dims the lights of its historic center, allowing a single beacon to move through the crowd: the Macchina dell'Assunta. This 16-meter-tall column, topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary, is carried on the shoulders of dozens of Portatori dressed in white and light blue. Established in 2004, inspired by the Macchina di Santa Rosa in Viterbo, this procession has become the heart of the celebrations in honor of Maria SS.ma Assunta, patron saint of the city's co-cathedral, featuring solemn vespers, prayer-filled crowds, and the act of entrustment of the city in Piazza Indipendenza.

A column of light in the night of Sora

On the evening of August 14th, the city of Sora, in the province of Frosinone, experiences the most intense moment of its religious calendar: the Transport of the Macchina dell'Assunta. A metal structure about 16 meters high, closed at the base and progressively opening toward the sky, lifts the statue of Maria SS.ma Assunta above the rooftops of the historic center. When the public streetlights are turned off, the illuminated Macchina advances between two wings of the crowd, supported on the shoulders of the Portatori: a breathtaking sight that draws thousands of faithful and curious visitors every year from across the Liri Valley and southern Lazio.

A young tradition with ancient roots

The solemnity of the Assumption has been celebrated in Sora for centuries; the city's co-cathedral is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. However, the current form of the procession was born in 2004, when the traditional cathedral procession was transformed into the transport of a monumental column, openly inspired by the famous Macchina di Santa Rosa in Viterbo. The current structure, in use since 2012, has reached 16 meters in height. In 2025, the Transport celebrated its twentieth edition, a sign of a tradition that, although recent, has become deeply rooted in the city's identity.

The Portatori, the beating heart of the festival

The absolute protagonists are the Portatori of the Sodalizio: in recent editions, up to 85 volunteers in white and light blue uniforms, blessed before departure in the church of Santa Restituta, where they receive the blue roses used to decorate the base of the Macchina. Alongside them, a miniature version of the structure is carried by children, a symbol of the continuity of the tradition. The route winds through the streets of the center to Piazza Indipendenza, where the bishop of the diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo pronounces the act of entrustment of the City of Sora to Mary Assumed into Heaven.

The ritual of August 14th

The eve follows a well-established liturgy: in the late afternoon, the statue of the Madonna is hoisted to the top of the column in Piazza Indipendenza, followed by evening mass and the First Vespers of the Assumption. In the evening, with the lights out, the Macchina begins its journey amidst applause that accompanies the effort of the Portatori, until its return and the final blessing. On August 15th, the solemnity continues with masses in the co-cathedral, culminating in the pontifical mass, while in the following days, the festival intertwines with the celebrations of Saint Dominic the Abbot, which continue until August 22nd.

The two processions of the Assumption

Sora actually preserves a double Marian devotion. In addition to the Transport of the Macchina, the parish of Saint Dominic the Abbot accompanies the statue of the Sleeping Virgin in procession, laid on a stretcher according to the iconography of the Dormitio. This is followed by the coronation of the statue of the Assumption, raised to about 7 meters inside the basilica, where it remains on display until August 22nd: a complete ritual cycle that makes Sora one of the capitals of Assumption devotion in Lazio.

Ferragosto in the Volscian city

The festival is also an opportunity to discover Sora, an ancient Volscian city nestled on the Liri River at the foot of the Ernici Mountains. The Municipality of Sora and the parish community enliven the Ferragosto holiday with secular events alongside religious rites: brass band concerts, musical performances, and the traditional lottery have accompanied the festive evenings in various editions, in a popular and familiar atmosphere typical of the great patronal festivals of the Ciociaria region.

Macchina dell'Assunta — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Feast of the Assumption in Sora has not yet been officially announced. Tradition has always linked the Transport of the Macchina dell'Assunta to the evening of August 14th, the eve of the Assumption, with celebrations continuing on August 15th in the co-cathedral. The detailed program of festivities is usually published by the parish and the Municipality of Sora in the weeks leading up to Ferragosto.

Pending the official announcement, the 2026 edition should follow the established pattern of the festival: positioning of the Madonna statue on the column in Piazza Indipendenza in the late afternoon of August 14th, evening mass, First Vespers of the Assumption, and, with the lights out, the Transport of the Macchina through the streets of the historic center on the shoulders of the Portatori. On August 15th, the solemnity continues with masses and the pontifical mass in the co-cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, while Marian celebrations and those of Saint Dominic the Abbot traditionally continue until August 22nd. We recommend checking dates and the program on the channels of the Diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo and the Municipality of Sora as Ferragosto approaches.
