A village festival in the heart of Ciociaria

The Festivities in honor of Saint Roch take place every year on August 23rd in Fontechiari, a small town of just over twelve hundred inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, in the Lazio region. The heart of the festival is Piazza G. Marconi, the space where the town gathers in summer and where the Festival Committee sets up the event dedicated to the pilgrim saint.

Fontechiari stands at an altitude of approximately 375 meters in the Valle di Comino, the greenest strip of the Ciociaria, close to the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. The village, called Schiavi until 1862, owes its current name to the intermittent springs that dot the territory: a detail that tells the story of the rural soul of this community and its festivals.

Saint Roch, a deep-rooted popular cult

Saint Roch is one of the most widespread devotions in the towns of Central and Southern Italy: a protector invoked against epidemics and patron saint of pilgrims, he is celebrated with processions, illuminations, and social gatherings that combine the religious dimension with a convivial one. In Fontechiari, the recurrence takes place in a very busy August calendar and precedes by only one day the feast of the patron saint Saint Bartholomew, celebrated on August 24th: two contiguous events that, in fact, transform the last decade of the month into the most intense moment of the year for the community.

Inside the Fontechiari Summer

The Saint Roch festivities are not an isolated event: they are part of the Fontechiari Summer program, promoted by the Municipal Administration together with the Pro Loco Fontechiari APS, the festival committees, and local businesses. The program is distributed across squares, hamlets, and the historic center from July to the end of August, with simple and popular formats: live music, karaoke, card games, gastronomic evenings, and religious celebrations.

Those who arrive for Saint Roch can therefore find the town already lively for days, with the stalls of Artinchiaro among the alleys and the square ready to welcome the evening.

What to expect

It is a village festival in the most authentic sense of the term: no big stages or tickets, but the illuminated square, stands managed by volunteers, shared tables, and music that accompanies the evening until late. Participation is free and the atmosphere remains familiar, also suitable for those traveling with children.

Around the festival: what to see in Fontechiari

It is worth arriving a few hours early to visit the village. The walled center is dominated by the Torre Boncompagni, a square tower of medieval origin; just outside are the singular Napoleonic cemetery and the hermitage of Saint Onuphrius, a rock-cut place of worship immersed in greenery. The parish church preserves 14th-century frescoes and works attributed to the circle of the Cavalier d'Arpino, while the sanctuary houses a 13th-century wooden crucifix. All around, the paths of the Valle di Comino offer panoramic walks through woods and countryside.

Flavors of the Valle di Comino

The local cuisine is that of the peasant Ciociaria: sagne e fagioli (pasta and beans), wild vegetable soups, grilled meats, sheep's milk cheeses, and extra virgin olive oil from the surrounding hills. During the August festivals, the town stands often offer traditional dishes at popular prices, and it is the best opportunity to taste them in company.
