About Saint Nicholas Festival

The Saint Nicholas Patronal Festival is the most cherished event in San Nicola la Strada, in the province of Caserta. Every year, on Easter Tuesday (Martedì in Albis), the patron saint's statue leaves the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli on a large flower-adorned boat, carried on the shoulders of the 'accollatori' through the city streets. Fireworks, illuminations, a marching band, concerts in the Villa Comunale, and the famous dance of Saint Nicholas on the church square mark four days where popular devotion and joy intertwine.

The most anticipated festival in San Nicola la Strada

In the town of San Nicola la Strada, just outside the provincial capital in the heart of Campania, the Saint Nicholas Patronal Festival is more than just a religious observance: it is the moment when an entire city recognizes itself, gathers, and shares its story. The celebrations center on Easter Tuesday (Martedì in Albis), the Tuesday following Easter—a choice rooted in the history of emigration, as those returning home for the Easter holidays could also participate in their patron saint's festival.

Saint Nicholas's boat, a unique tradition

The element that makes this festival unlike any other is the boat. The statue of Saint Nicholas of Bari does not parade on a standard float or litter, but on a large vessel—once entirely wooden, now also made of aluminum—which dozens of men lift on their shoulders and carry through the city streets. It commemorates the journey of the saint's relics from Asia Minor to Bari in the 11th century, transformed into an urban ritual that has been repeated for over a century.

Those who carry the boat are called accollatori: there are generally about forty, often many more, united since 2014 in the Saint Nicholas Accollatori Catholic Association, which now organizes the festival alongside the parish, the Pro Loco, and the Municipality. The tradition of the accollatori, however, is much older than the association, dating back to the early 20th century.

The day of the procession

The heart of the festival is the Saint's departure from the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Piazza Parrocchia in the early afternoon. The flower-adorned boat crosses the threshold amidst confetti, the notes of the band, and the crowd's applause, beginning a long journey that touches Via Appia, the cemetery area, Via Marconi, Piazza Municipio, and the city center streets, only returning late in the evening. The original statue, protected for its artistic value, remains safely guarded; a faithful resin copy is carried in the procession, while the historical image is kept in the chapel of the Archconfraternity of Saint Nicholas of Bari and the Holy Rosary.

The dance of Saint Nicholas

Upon return, the most moving moment of the day takes place on the church square: the dance of Saint Nicholas, which locals simply call the “Saint's dance.” The accollatori sway the boat to the rhythm of music—traditionally the Radetzky March—tracing a large sign of the cross in the air, as if the vessel were truly sailing on the sea. It is the patron's farewell to his faithful, and those who witness it for the first time rarely forget it.

Fireworks, illuminations, and shows

Alongside the religious aspect runs a lively secular program, built each year by the association and supported by the participation of merchants and families. The staples include:

  • the opening fireworks on the morning of the first day, announcing the start of the festivities;
  • the lighting of the illuminations, which transforms Piazza Parrocchia, Piazza Municipio, and the center streets;
  • evening concerts in the Villa Comunale, featuring bands and artists from the Caserta and Naples areas;
  • the marching band that accompanies the boat's departure and return;
  • firework displays, true mass events that close the main evenings.

A festival for everyone, with free admission

All events, both religious and secular, are free and held outdoors: there are no tickets or reservations; you simply join in by heading to the streets. On peak days, the Municipality implements standard traffic and parking ordinances in Piazza Parrocchia and Piazza Municipio and prohibits the takeaway sale of drinks in glass containers in the areas affected by the events: measures that help ensure the festival is experienced safely.

Between the Royal Palace and the Terra di Lavoro

San Nicola la Strada is a town of just over twenty thousand inhabitants directly bordering Caserta: from the festival square, you can reach the Royal Palace of Caserta, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in just a few minutes. Visitors from outside the region can therefore combine the festival day with a visit to the royal park, the Belvedere of San Leucio, or the historic center of Caserta Vecchia, discovering an inland Campania made of great Bourbon monuments and small communities with tenacious traditions.

Saint Nicholas Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Saint Nicholas Patronal Festival took place in San Nicola la Strada from April 6 to 9, with Easter Tuesday — April 7 — as the highlight. Four days of religious rites, illuminations, concerts in the Villa Comunale, and firework displays, culminating in the departure of the Saint's flower-adorned boat carried by the accollatori and the traditional dance on the church square upon its evening return.

Four days of celebration in 2026

From April 6 to 9, 2026, faith and tradition intertwined in San Nicola la Strada in a packed program of religious and secular events, curated by the Saint Nicholas Accollatori Catholic Association together with the Santa Maria degli Angeli parish, led by Father Antimo Vigliotti.

The opening took place on the morning of Monday, April 6, with fireworks, followed in the evening by the lighting of the illuminations and the first concert in the Villa Comunale. The most anticipated day was Tuesday, April 7, Easter Tuesday: in the early afternoon, the “Pietro Musone” marching band set the mood, and at 3:00 PM, the flower-adorned boat left the church amidst confetti, for a long tour of the city streets and an evening return with the Saint's dance. The day concluded with a firework display at the Monument to the Fallen.

On Wednesday, April 8, the Villa Comunale hosted a second musical evening, while on Thursday, April 9, fireworks in the cemetery area officially concluded the festivities.
