About Ethnos Festival

Founded in 1995 at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, Ethnos is the International World Music Festival that brings global sounds to Naples and the surrounding Vesuvian towns every year. In San Giorgio a Cremano, near Naples, the festival directed by Gigi Di Luca enlivens the Parco di Villa Vannucchi and the Fonderie Righetti of Villa Bruno with concerts, workshops, and artist meet-and-greets. It serves as a bridge between distant cultures, traditional music, and new artistic languages, standing as one of Italy's longest-running and most acclaimed world music events.

Ethnos: World music at the foot of Mount Vesuvius

Established in 1995 with the aim of reviving the folk traditions of the Vesuvian area, Ethnos – International World Music Festival has evolved over the years into one of Italy's premier observatories for global music. The event is organized by the La Bazzarra cooperative under the artistic direction of Gigi Di Luca. It was born from a clear vision: to build bridges between diverse cultures through music, fostering a dialogue between artists from every corner of the globe and the historic sites of the Vesuvian territory. Among the towns that host the festival, San Giorgio a Cremano, in the province of Naples, remains one of the most loyal and beloved stops for the Campanian public.

San Giorgio a Cremano: A historic stop on the journey

In the town of San Giorgio a Cremano, the festival selects two exceptional venues. The first is the Parco di Villa Vannucchi, one of the Vesuvian Villas of the Golden Mile, whose open-air arena hosts major evening concerts in a historic green setting. The second is the Villa Bruno complex, specifically the Fonderie Righetti—a space reclaimed and returned to the city that hosts indoor evenings, meetings, and the final stages of the contest dedicated to new talent. These two locations perfectly reflect the festival's soul: where historic heritage and contemporary research walk hand in hand.

A traveling festival between Naples and the Vesuvian towns

Ethnos follows a well-established traveling format: over the course of about a month, between September and October, it alternates its evenings between Naples and the towns in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. In recent editions, the program has visited, in addition to San Giorgio a Cremano, locations such as:

  • Portici, with its monumental Royal Palace;
  • Naples, featuring historic churches in the old town and urban spaces;
  • Ercolano and Torre del Greco, the historic home of the organization;
  • Castellammare di Stabia, Boscotrecase, and Boscoreale.

This widespread geography allows the public to discover villas, parks, and archaeological sites in the province of Naples, all while following the common thread of traditional music.

Ethnos Gener/Azioni: The award for new talent

Alongside the main program, the festival dedicates an official section to young artists: Ethnos Gener/Azioni. This award is reserved for musicians, groups, and companies whose creativity focuses on cultural dialogue, experimentation, and the contemporary reinterpretation of folk traditions. The final takes place in San Giorgio a Cremano, at the Fonderie Righetti of Villa Bruno, in collaboration with the local municipality. The winner earns a spot in future editions of the Ethnos Festival in Campania and Folkest in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in addition to financial support provided by Nuovo IMAIE for a tour.

More than just concerts

Visitors to Ethnos quickly realize that the lineup extends far beyond live performances. Recent programs have complemented concerts with a series of activities that make the festival a well-rounded experience:

  • Workshops on singing, dance, and traditional instruments led by guest artists;
  • Meetings and thematic panels with musicians, journalists, and scholars;
  • Performances and contemporary dance events;
  • Screenings of music-themed films and documentaries;
  • The Ethnos for Schools project, which brings world music concerts and workshops to schools in the Vesuvian area during the spring.

Thirty years of history

In 2025, the festival celebrated its thirtieth edition, marked by a volume dedicated to the artistic and cultural journey of the festival from 1995 to the present. It explores themes of resistance, diversity, territory, community, and generations. This milestone speaks volumes about the continuity of a project capable of bringing artists from dozens of countries to Campania while maintaining a deep bond with local communities.

Why it's worth visiting

Ethnos is the ideal choice for those who love exploratory music and cultural fusion. In a single season, the lineup might feature Sardinian polyphony, West African rhythms, Middle Eastern strings, and reinterpretations of Southern Italian folk repertoire. In San Giorgio a Cremano, all of this is experienced within a historic park or a regenerated industrial space, just minutes from Naples with Mount Vesuvius in the background: an evening that combines listening, discovery, and a sense of community.
