World music at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, between Villa Vannucchi and the Fonderie Righetti of Villa Bruno
Established in 1995 with the aim of reviving the folk traditions of the Vesuvian area, Ethnos – International World Music Festival has evolved over the years into one of Italy's premier observatories for global music. The event is organized by the La Bazzarra cooperative under the artistic direction of Gigi Di Luca. It was born from a clear vision: to build bridges between diverse cultures through music, fostering a dialogue between artists from every corner of the globe and the historic sites of the Vesuvian territory. Among the towns that host the festival, San Giorgio a Cremano, in the province of Naples, remains one of the most loyal and beloved stops for the Campanian public.
In the town of San Giorgio a Cremano, the festival selects two exceptional venues. The first is the Parco di Villa Vannucchi, one of the Vesuvian Villas of the Golden Mile, whose open-air arena hosts major evening concerts in a historic green setting. The second is the Villa Bruno complex, specifically the Fonderie Righetti—a space reclaimed and returned to the city that hosts indoor evenings, meetings, and the final stages of the contest dedicated to new talent. These two locations perfectly reflect the festival's soul: where historic heritage and contemporary research walk hand in hand.
Ethnos follows a well-established traveling format: over the course of about a month, between September and October, it alternates its evenings between Naples and the towns in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. In recent editions, the program has visited, in addition to San Giorgio a Cremano, locations such as:
This widespread geography allows the public to discover villas, parks, and archaeological sites in the province of Naples, all while following the common thread of traditional music.
Alongside the main program, the festival dedicates an official section to young artists: Ethnos Gener/Azioni. This award is reserved for musicians, groups, and companies whose creativity focuses on cultural dialogue, experimentation, and the contemporary reinterpretation of folk traditions. The final takes place in San Giorgio a Cremano, at the Fonderie Righetti of Villa Bruno, in collaboration with the local municipality. The winner earns a spot in future editions of the Ethnos Festival in Campania and Folkest in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in addition to financial support provided by Nuovo IMAIE for a tour.
Visitors to Ethnos quickly realize that the lineup extends far beyond live performances. Recent programs have complemented concerts with a series of activities that make the festival a well-rounded experience:
In 2025, the festival celebrated its thirtieth edition, marked by a volume dedicated to the artistic and cultural journey of the festival from 1995 to the present. It explores themes of resistance, diversity, territory, community, and generations. This milestone speaks volumes about the continuity of a project capable of bringing artists from dozens of countries to Campania while maintaining a deep bond with local communities.
Ethnos is the ideal choice for those who love exploratory music and cultural fusion. In a single season, the lineup might feature Sardinian polyphony, West African rhythms, Middle Eastern strings, and reinterpretations of Southern Italian folk repertoire. In San Giorgio a Cremano, all of this is experienced within a historic park or a regenerated industrial space, just minutes from Naples with Mount Vesuvius in the background: an evening that combines listening, discovery, and a sense of community.
The Ethnos Festival returns in 2026 for its thirty-first edition, scheduled from September 5 to October 4 between Naples and the Vesuvian towns. It follows the usual traveling format, visiting historic villas, parks, and cultural spaces in the province of Naples. Artistic direction remains under Gigi Di Luca, organized by the La Bazzarra cooperative.
For the town of San Giorgio a Cremano, the date is already set for October 10, 2026, when the Fonderie Righetti of Villa Bruno will host the final evening of Ethnos Gener/Azioni, now in its eighth year. The award is produced by the Ethnos Festival and the La Bazzarra cooperative in collaboration with the Municipality of San Giorgio a Cremano.
In the spring of 2026, the Ethnos for Schools project already brought world music concerts and workshops to schools in the Vesuvian towns. The San Giorgio stop took place on March 31, 2026, at the Fonderie di Villa Bruno with the Nubras Ensemble, winner of the 2025 Gener/Azioni award. Additionally, on March 10, 2026, at Villa Campolieto, the volume celebrating the festival's thirty-year history was presented.
The detailed program for the 31st edition, including artists, times, and venues for individual evenings, has not yet been published by the organization. It will be released on the official website festivalethnos.it and the festival's social media channels in the weeks leading up to the start, scheduled for September 5, 2026.
Confirmed events:
Applications for the Gener/Azioni award closed on May 31, 2026. The winner receives official programming in the 2026/2027 editions of the Ethnos Festival in Campania and Folkest in Friuli Venezia Giulia, a 10,000 euro financial contribution from Nuovo IMAIE for a tour with at least five live performances, as well as reimbursement of travel expenses and room and board during the final.
San Giorgio a Cremano is easily reached from Naples via the Circumvesuviana (EAV) train, which serves the town with stops on lines heading toward Sorrento and Sarno. By car, exit the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway or the Naples ring road (tangenziale) and follow signs for San Giorgio a Cremano. On concert nights, it is advisable to arrive early as parking near the historic villas is limited. The reference airport is Naples–Capodichino.
Some festival events offer free admission until capacity is reached, while others are ticketed at affordable prices. Tickets are available through the Azzurro Service network and at the box offices set up at the performance venues. Updated programs, schedules, and booking methods are published on the official website festivalethnos.it.

Open-air evenings at Parco di Villa Vannucchi take place between September and October; a light sweater is useful after sunset. A visit pairs perfectly with a walk through the Vesuvian Villas of the Golden Mile or a hike on Mount Vesuvius earlier in the day.
