Every December 6th, the municipality of Montesarchio, in the province of Benevento, celebrates Saint Nicholas of Bari, its patron saint. The Saint Nicholas Patronal Feast is the most cherished religious and civic event of the year for the local community, blending solemn liturgy, a procession through the historic streets, music accompanying the parade, and a festive atmosphere that brings together families, brotherhoods, and local associations.
The cult of Saint Nicholas in Montesarchio has very ancient origins, although there are no precise historical records to date its beginning. The dates 1612 and 1615 are carved into the architraves of the two entrance doors of the Abbey, indicating the building's foundation; however, deeper studies reveal that the central nave is of medieval origin, a sign that devotion to the Saint was already rooted in the village. The ancient parish of San Nicola was later replaced by the 18th-century Church of the Most Holy Trinity, consecrated by Cardinal Orsini.
The focal point of the festival is the Abbey of San Nicola in the historic center, built between the 12th and 13th centuries and renovated several times over the centuries. The interior, with two naves, preserves remnants of the original Romanesque structure—such as the arch preceding the presbytery—and a fine high altar in polychrome marble. The abbey is located on the northern slope of the Tower of Montesarchio, the city's iconic monument; during the festival days, it is prepared and decorated for the occasion and becomes the starting point for the devotional procession.
The celebration is not limited to December 6th. The feast is preceded by the solemn novena, which begins on November 27th: nine days of prayer that guide the community toward the Patron Saint's day. Elders recall that, until a few decades ago, on the evening of November 26th, a person would walk through the town streets ringing a bell to announce the start of the Saint Nicholas novena: a popular custom that illustrates how deeply the festival is woven into the daily life of the village.
The most anticipated moment is the historical procession, which moves from the Abbey after the solemn mass and travels through the town with the statue of the Saint carried on shoulders. Local tradition says that the statue was so heavy that the bearers would refresh themselves before starting with a hearty bean soup, while people would offer tarallini and wine during breaks along the route. The parade concludes in Piazza Umberto with the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the Patron Saint by the mayor, a gesture that encapsulates the bond between Montesarchio and Saint Nicholas. According to custom, the day also includes fireworks and musical accompaniment for the procession.
In Montesarchio, the patronal feast marks the symbolic start of the Christmas season. The municipal administration installs illuminations in the main streets and squares and switches them on on December 6th, the Patron Saint's day. The lights remain on until Epiphany, accompanying the entire calendar of holiday events, which is planned in collaboration with local associations to avoid overlaps and optimize resources.
Montesarchio is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and is the second-largest municipality in the province of Benevento by population, located at the foot of Mount Taburno in the heart of the Caudine Valley in Campania. Visitors arriving for the festival can combine it with a visit to the Castle and the Tower, which house the National Archaeological Museum of Sannio Caudino featuring the famous Assteas Vase, and a walk through the historic center that grew along the ancient Appian Way, the Roman road that passed through here and was used by crusaders traveling to Jerusalem in the Middle Ages.
The Patron Saint's feast traditionally falls on December 6th, the fixed liturgical date for Saint Nicholas of Bari. As of the writing of this sheet, the detailed program for the 2026 edition—mass times, procession route, and civic and musical initiatives—has not yet been published by the municipality or the parish. It is therefore advisable to check for updates on the official channels of the Municipality of Montesarchio and the associations organizing the festival in the weeks leading up to December 6th.
No official program has been published yet for the 2026 edition of the Saint Nicholas of Bari Patronal Feast in Montesarchio. The reference date remains December 6th, the liturgical feast of Saint Nicholas and the city's Patron Saint day, but times, parade routes, and side events will be announced by the Municipality of Montesarchio and the parish only in the weeks leading up to the event.
The established tradition includes the preparatory novena starting on November 27th, the solemn mass in the Abbey of San Nicola in the historic center, the procession with the statue of the Saint carried on shoulders through the town streets, and the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the Patron Saint in Piazza Umberto. The religious part is accompanied by fireworks, musical accompaniment for the parade, and the lighting of Christmas illuminations, which remain in operation in Montesarchio until Epiphany.
We recommend checking for confirmation of the date and the final program on the official channels of the Municipality of Montesarchio (province of Benevento, Campania) and the associations collaborating on the organization of the festival.
December 6th, the day of Saint Nicholas of Bari, preceded by the novena starting on November 27th.
Abbey of San Nicola and the historic center of Montesarchio (procession arrival in Piazza Umberto), province of Benevento, Campania.
Montesarchio is located at an altitude of about 300 meters, at the foot of Mount Taburno, on the axis of the ancient Appian Way between Benevento and the Caudine Valley. The most convenient access is by car or bus. The Benevento–Cancello–Naples railway line via the Caudine Valley, which serves the Montesarchio station, has been undergoing work and service suspensions for years: before planning a train trip, it is essential to check the status of the line on EAV channels.
Participation in religious celebrations and civic events is free and open to all.
In December, the climate in the Caudine Valley is cold and damp: bring warm clothing and comfortable shoes for the sloping alleys of the historic center. During the procession, traffic in the old town may be diverted; it is best to park outside and continue on foot. Since the illuminations remain on until Epiphany, the visit can be combined with the municipality's Christmas calendar.
