The spring patronal feast of Villa Santa Maria, the home of chefs
Every year at the beginning of May, Villa Santa Mariaโa small village in the province of Chieti, Abruzzoโpays tribute to its patron saint, Saint Nicholas of Bari, with a spring patronal feast. The celebration, traditionally held on the first weekend of the month, brings together residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns, all united in honoring the Bishop of Myra, a figure deeply beloved throughout Southern Italy.
Villa Santa Maria is known across Italy as the home of chefs. For centuries, this village overlooking the Sangro River valley, at the foot of the Majella National Park, has produced generations of master chefs who first honed their craft in the kitchens of the Caracciolo court. The Saint Nicholas festival weaves this gastronomic and artisanal identity together with religious devotion, fostering the strong sense of community that this small town continues to cherish.
The heart of the celebration is religious, featuring a solemn mass in honor of the patron saint and a procession with the statue of Saint Nicholas through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by a brass band and the faithful. Beyond the liturgical functions, the village squares come alive with popular festivities and community gatherings.
The festival revolves around the Parish Church of Saint Nicholas of Bari, the village's mother church, designed by architect Giacomo Torrese and built between 1816 and 1826. The building houses precious works of art, including the Biblical Triad by Francesco Maria De Benedictis and The Apotheosis of Saint Nicholas by Gaetano D'Agostino, both from the 19th-century Neapolitan school. In 2026, the parish celebrates the bicentennial of the church's dedication (1826-2026) with a rich calendar of initiatives throughout the year.
In Villa Santa Maria, Saint Nicholas is honored twice a year: the spring patronal feast in early May and the liturgical feast on December 6th. The May edition, set against the backdrop of the blooming Abruzzo countryside, is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Chieti hinterland, blending tradition, spirituality, and culinary culture.
The 2026 edition of the spring patronal feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari was held in Villa Santa Maria on May 2 and 3, 2026. The celebration fell during a particularly significant year for the village: the parish celebrated the bicentennial of the Church of Saint Nicholas of Bari (1826-2026), which opened on April 23rd with a solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Archbishop of Chieti-Vasto, Monsignor Bruno Forte.
The May festival, featuring the mass in honor of the patron saint and the procession with the saint's statue, was one of the central moments of the jubilee calendar, which continued throughout the year with exhibitions, conferences, and events dedicated to the history and art of the mother church, culminating in the closing celebration on December 6th.
Villa Santa Maria is located in the hinterland of the province of Chieti, in the middle Sangro Valley. By car, it can be reached via the SS652 Fondovalle Sangro road. The nearest train stations are along the Adriatic line (Vasto-San Salvo or Ortona), from which you can continue by car inland.
The patronal feast takes place in the public spaces of the village and the parish church; participation is free and open to all.
The festival is traditionally held on the first weekend of May. It is recommended to verify dates and times with the Saint Nicholas of Bari Parish or the Municipality of Villa Santa Maria.
