Bari's grand patronal feast, blending faith, historical pageantry, and a sea-bound procession
The Saint Nicholas Festival is the defining event for the Apulian capital: a patronal feast that transforms the old town of Bari and the entire harbor front into a grand stage for faith and tradition every year between late April and late May. At its heart lies the figure of Saint Nicholas of Myra, the 4th-century bishop who became the city's patron after 1087, when sixty-two sailors from Bari spirited his relics away from Lycia to their home city, where they still rest today in the crypt of the Basilica dedicated to him.
Saint Nicholas is venerated by both Catholics and Orthodox Christians, making the Bari festival an event of international significance. Every year, pilgrims from Russia, Ukraine, Serbia, and Greece travel to the Pontifical Basilica of Saint Nicholas, in the heart of Bari Vecchia, to pray before the relics and witness the collection of the Holy Manna, the miraculous liquid that tradition says exudes from the saint's bones. The festivities conclude on May 22nd with the welcoming of Orthodox pilgrims and the Divine Liturgy according to the Julian calendar.
The most anticipated moments occur during the central three-day period. On the evening of May 7th, the Historical Pageant takes place, with over 650 costumed participants reenacting the arrival of the relics: the parade starts from Piazza Federico II di Svevia, at the foot of the Swabian Castle, and reaches Piazza San Nicola. May 8th is the day of the Sea Procession: at dawn, the silver statue of the saint is carried to the pier and embarked on a decorated fishing boat, which heads out to sea followed by hundreds of vessels. In the afternoon, the skies over Bari light up with the Frecce Tricolori Air Show, while the evening landing of the statue and the grand fireworks displays at Molo Sant'Antonio bring the day to a close. On May 9th, the anniversary of the translation, the solemn concelebration takes place, featuring the collection of the Holy Manna.
Surrounding the religious celebrations is a vibrant popular festival: the historic Saint Nicholas Fair with over 170 exhibitors, the Taste Village dedicated to typical Apulian products, concerts, flag-waver and drummer performances, and the illuminations that light up the seafront. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Bari in the height of spring, enjoying raw seafood at the old harbor, orecchiette pasta on the famous Strada delle Orecchiette, and the unique atmosphere of the historic center.
The Saint Nicholas Festival is organized by the Pontifical Basilica of Saint Nicholas, managed by the Dominican Fathers, in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto and the Municipality of Bari, the capital of the Puglia region.
The 2026 edition marked the 939th anniversary of the translation of the relics of Saint Nicholas from Myra to Bari (1087-2026). The long calendar of celebrations opened on April 20 with Mass in the Basilica and continued with the exposition of the saint's statue (April 26), the drawing of the fishing boats for the sea procession (April 28), and the novena of prayer. The central triptych of May 7, 8, and 9 drew thousands of locals and pilgrims to the old town and the seafront. The festival concluded on May 22 with the welcoming of Orthodox pilgrims and the Divine Liturgy according to the Julian calendar.
The heart of the festival is the Pontifical Basilica of Saint Nicholas (Largo Abate Elia 13, Bari Vecchia). Events take place across Piazza San Nicola, Piazza Federico II di Svevia, Molo San Nicola, Molo Sant'Antonio, and the city's seafront.
Bari is served by the Karol Wojtyลa Airport and the Central Station, located about a 15-minute walk from the old town. During the peak days (May 7-9), there are significant traffic and parking restrictions in the center; it is best to reach the area on foot or by public transport.
Religious celebrations, the Historical Pageant, the Sea Procession, and the fireworks displays are free of charge.
