The patronal feast of Maglie featuring rituals, artistic illuminations, and street food in the heart of Salento
The Saint Nicholas Festival is the most anticipated and well-attended event of the year in Maglie, a key town in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. Every May, the town pays homage to its patron saint with four days of celebrations that blend popular faith, tradition, and civic festivities, drawing visitors from across the Salento region.
Saint Nicholas is venerated in Maglie as the primary patron, joined by co-patrons Saint Oronzo and the Madonna delle Grazie. The festival is organized by the Saint Nicholas Festival Association of Maglie in collaboration with the City of Maglie and the Parrocchia Presentazione del Signore, representing a long-standing union between religious devotion and community celebration.
The spiritual core of the festival is the preparatory triduum, featuring evening Eucharistic celebrations leading up to the main days. The most moving moment is the solemn procession on the eve of the feast, when the statues of Saint Nicholas, Saint Oronzo, and the Madonna delle Grazie are carried through the streets of the center, accompanied by the faithful, brass bands, and light displays. As the procession returns to the Mother Church, the sky is illuminated by the evocative release of hot air balloons, including lanterns decorated by local schoolchildren.
The tradition of the Salento festival lives on in the spectacular artistic illuminations, with a large light structure enveloping the Francesca Capece monument in Piazza Aldo Moro, which serves as the backdrop for sound and light shows every evening. The program also includes brass band concerts with renowned guest ensembles and famous fireworks, ranging from the morning pyrotechnic salute to the nighttime pyromusical show that concludes the patron's day.
Beyond the rituals, the festival is a celebration of flavors and conviviality. "Cibo in Festa" transforms Largo Madonna delle Grazie into a grand square of taste, animated by local and national street food stands: gourmet sandwiches, fried specialties, regional delicacies, craft beers, and creative culinary offerings. The "Artigianato in Festa" market brings Via Roma to life with artisan creations, while a large funfair entertains families and children throughout the festival.
Between concerts, cabaret in the square, vintage car and motorcycle rallies, and dance evenings, the Saint Nicholas Festival represents the very identity of Maglie and Salento: a blend of devotion, tradition, gastronomy, and joy that renews the bond between the community and its patron each year.
Four days of festivities animated Maglie from May 7 to 10, 2026, under the direction of the Saint Nicholas Festival Association of Maglie, the City of Maglie, and the Parrocchia Presentazione del Signore. The program combined religious rites in honor of the patron saint with major civic attractions, including illuminations, bands, fireworks, and street food.
The highlight was the solemn procession on the eve of May 8, followed by the release of hot air balloons, brass band concerts by guest ensembles (Banda «Città di Racale» and Banda «Città di Rutigliano»), and the patron's day fireworks displays. To complete the festival, the eighth edition of "Cibo in Festa," the "Artigianato in Festa" market on Via Roma, the "I Malfattori" cabaret show, a vintage car and motorcycle rally, and the "Stayin' Alive Dance Party" evening were held.
Maglie is located in lower Salento, in the Province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 and SS275 roads; the town has a train station on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line, connecting Lecce to Otranto and Gallipoli. The nearest airport is Brindisi.
Access to the celebrations, shows, and festival areas is free. The "Cibo in Festa" street food area is located in Largo Madonna delle Grazie, the market in Via Roma, and the funfair in the Via Fratelli Piccinno area. For information on stands: +39 368 3936454.
