The patronal feast of Montemesola

The Saint Michael the Archangel Festival is the most cherished annual event in Montemesola, a village of approximately 3,500 inhabitants in the province of Taranto, Puglia. For three evenings, traditionally spanning the last weekend of August, the town transforms into a grand open-air stage: the central Piazza IV Novembre and the streets of the historic center fill with festive lights, stalls, music, and devotion. The organization is handled by the Saint Michael the Archangel Festival Committee, active since 2015, which crafts a program each year that perfectly balances religious observance with civic entertainment.

An ancient cult

Devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel in Montemesola has deep, centuries-old roots. Around 1500, Basilian monks sought refuge in the La Gravina area, just outside the town, where they carved out a small rock-hewn church. In 1751, Francesco Saraceno commissioned a church dedicated to the Saint, which was later enriched with a fine wooden statue. As popular devotion grew, the current Church of Saint Michael the Archangel on Via Regina Margherita was inaugurated on November 6, 1932. It is still cared for by the historic Confraternity, which also oversees the Holy Week rites and the Procession of the Sacred Mysteries.

Three evenings of faith and spectacle

The program alternates between liturgical events and evenings of grand entertainment in the square, usually starting at 9:00 PM with free admission. Over the years, the lineup has featured Puglian folk music concerts, orchestras, tribute bands, and comedy shows, appealing to believers, families, and young people alike. The festival draws visitors from all neighboring towns, cementing Montemesola's status as one of the summer event capitals in the heart of the Ionian province.

The procession and the Saint Michael Award

The centerpiece is the solemn procession of the patron saint's statue through the town streets. Saint Michael the Archangel is the protector of law enforcement and the armed forces; for this reason, the statue is escorted in a formal ceremony by the State Police and the Air Force Riflemen of the 16th Wing of Martina Franca. In recent years, the final evening has also hosted the presentation of the Saint Michael Award, a recognition given to distinguished individuals, concluding with a spectacular fireworks display.

Gastronomy and atmosphere

There is also a food area where visitors can savor local specialties and traditional Puglian products between one event and the next. The illuminations, stalls, and music create the classic atmosphere of Southern patronal feasts—a collective ritual that unites the entire community of Montemesola.
