The first festival of the year in Udine, in the Chiavris district, featuring gastronomy, music, and tradition
When the San Marco Festival reopens in April, Udine residents know that the festival season has officially begun. It's the first of the year in the city and takes place in the Chiavris district, organized with dedication by the Parish of San Marco Evangelista around the patron saint's feast day. An event rooted in the life of the neighborhood, which attracts families, neighbors, and visitors over two weekends.
The heart of the festival is its gastronomy: gnocchi, the unmissable frico with polenta, grilled meats, and traditional Friulian dishes, prepared by parish volunteers. The kitchens open every evening, and on holidays also for lunch, in a convivial atmosphere that is the true secret to the event's success.
Alongside the food stalls, the program offers plenty to experience: the antique market, the charity raffle, evening concerts by local groups and bands, magic shows, Ludobus games for children, and cultural initiatives such as conferences and the traditional patron saint's concert with local choirs. The religious dimension is also present, with celebrations dedicated to San Marco.
Now in its 46th edition, the San Marco Festival is proof of how Friulian festivals can keep the identity of neighborhoods alive. In Chiavris, between a plate of frico and a charity raffle ticket, not only the patron saint is celebrated but also the sense of belonging of an entire community.
