A re-enactment of the ancient Abruzzo wedding procession in the heart of the National Park

In the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the municipality of Villetta Barrea (L'Aquila province) preserves one of the most evocative traditions of the Abruzzo mountains: the Dodda Procession. The "dodda" was the public transport of the bride's trousseau and dowry from her father's home to her future husband'sāa moment of collective celebration, but also a display of the families' wealth. About ten days before the wedding, the women of the bride's family and her closest friends would accompany the trousseau to the new home.
The procession consists exclusively of women, who parade in a precise protocol order through all the village streets. Dressed for the occasion in traditional costumes reconstructed through historical and anthropological research, they carry on their heads mattresses, blankets, sheets, towels, nightgowns, copper baskets and vessels, and sometimes the family gold. Along the route, villagers throw rice, coins, and sugared almonds as a wish for prosperity, while the mother-in-law welcomes the procession with a symbolic gift.
The last authentic "dodda" took place in Villetta Barrea in the early 1970s and remains a vivid memory among the village elders. In 2005, the Pietramara Cultural Association launched the first re-enactment, which has been repeated every year since on the last weekend of August, attracting tourists from all over Italy and many Villetta natives who have emigrated abroad.
The procession traditionally starts from Piazza Castello, in the upper part of the village, and concludes in Piazza Fratelli Virgilio, in the town center. The parade is followed by an evening of celebration with traditional Abruzzo folk songs and dances, animated by regional folk groups, transforming the square into a stage of music and tradition.
Overlooking Lake Barrea and surrounded by the park's forests, Villetta Barrea offers the ideal setting for this re-enactment: stone alleys, pristine nature, and a strong sense of community. The Dodda Procession is now one of the defining events of the Abruzzo summer, bridging collective memory, popular culture, and tourism.
The Pietramara Cultural Association has not yet announced the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Dodda Procession in Villetta Barrea. Based on previous editions, the re-enactment is expected to take place on the last weekend of August, featuring the parade of women in traditional attire through the village streets and the customary evening of Abruzzo folk songs and dances. Information will be updated as soon as the program is confirmed.
