On December 8th, the hexagonal city celebrates Mary Most Holy Immaculate, its co-patron, with a procession, cannon fire, and a traditional fair.
The Immaculate Conception Festival is one of the most deeply felt events in the religious calendar of Grammichele, a town in the Calatino area of the province of Catania, in Sicily. Every year, on December 8th, the entire community gathers around Mary Most Holy Immaculate, venerated as the town's co-patron alongside the primary patrons, Saint Michael the Archangel and Saint Catherine. Devotion to the Immaculate Conception is intertwined with the very history of Grammichele, a "perfect" city with a famous hexagonal plan, founded in 1693 by Prince Carlo Maria Carafa Branciforti after the earthquake that destroyed the ancient Occhiolร in the Val di Noto.
The festivities are not limited to a single day. Starting in late November, the novena begins in the Church of the Immaculate overlooking Piazza Marconi: nine days of prayer and Eucharistic celebrations animated by the faithful, marked by the traditional singing of the stellario, an ancient form of Marian devotion that accompanies the wait for the solemnity. The church, an 18th-century building once attached to a convent, houses the precious statue of the Virgin on its high altar, the true heart of the festival.
The climax arrives on the afternoon of December 8th. The statue of the Immaculate solemnly emerges from the Church of the Immaculate and is welcomed in the square by the sound of cannon fire and the enthusiasm of the devotees. The procession then begins through the streets of the historic center: the statue of the Madonna, accompanied by the brass band, confraternities, and a crowd of faithful, crosses the wide streets that branch out from the great hexagonal square until reaching the Mother Church, where the solemn Holy Mass is celebrated. Amidst prayers, religious hymns, and moments of communal reflection, the city experiences one of its most participatory days.
The religious dimension is accompanied by a popular one: during the days of the festival, the historic Immaculate Conception Fair is set up along the streets of Grammichele, with stalls offering all kinds of items, sweets, local products, and various goods. The fair transforms the center into a lively open-air market and has represented, for generations, an opportunity for the inhabitants of the Calatino area to meet, weaving together faith, tradition, and social life.
Participating in the Immaculate Conception Festival means discovering the authentic soul of Grammichele: a community that proudly preserves its traditions within the evocative urban setting of the hexagonal city, unique in Sicily. Between the sound of the cannons, the solemnity of the procession, and the liveliness of the fair, December 8th offers the visitor a genuine immersion into the popular culture of the Val di Noto.
The 2026 Immaculate Conception Festival in Grammichele falls, as every year, on December 8th, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The celebration will follow the established tradition: the novena in late November with the singing of the stellario in the Church of the Immaculate, the solemn exit of the statue on the afternoon of the feast day welcomed by cannon fire, the procession through the historic center with the band to the Mother Church, and the solemn Holy Mass. The Immaculate Conception Fair with its stalls will be set up along the streets. The official times for the 2026 program will be communicated by the parish closer to the event.
Grammichele is located in the province of Catania, along the SS417 Catania-Gela road. By car, it is about 60 km from Catania and a few kilometers from Caltagirone. The train station is served by the Catania-Caltagirone-Gela line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
The novena and the exit of the statue take place at the Church of the Immaculate, in Piazza Marconi; the procession crosses the historic center to the Mother Church. The Immaculate Conception Fair is set up along the town streets.
Admission to the celebrations and the fair is free. We recommend wearing clothing suitable for the winter weather and checking the procession times at the Parish of the Immaculate.
