The patronal feast of the Romanico hamlet, blending prayer, music, and traditional tortelli
In the heart of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola region, overlooking the waters of Lake Maggiore, the town of Baveno preserves a charming tradition that brings the hamlet of Romanico to life every spring: the Saint Joseph's Festival. It is the feast of the hamlet's patron saint, held around March 19th, the day the Church celebrates Saint Joseph. This is not a grand, flashy event, but rather an authentic village celebration rooted in faith, neighborliness, and flavors passed down through generations.
The program alternates between spiritual moments and festive gatherings. It opens with a meditation and prayer session at the Oratory of Saint Joseph, continues with an evocative musical meditation evening, and culminates on the final Sunday—the most popular day—with Holy Mass celebrated on the Oratory's churchyard, followed by a community lunch. The Oratory of Saint Joseph serves as the common thread throughout the event, standing as the true center of the hamlet's life.
The delicious heart of the festival lies in the Saint Joseph's tortelli, distributed by donation, and the convivial lunch featuring a main course that changes from year to year, always prepared by the volunteers of the Romanico Festival Committee. This event requires reservations and fills tables with residents and curious visitors from around Lake Maggiore. In case of bad weather, Mass is celebrated in the Parish Church of Baveno.
The Saint Joseph's Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover the most genuine side of Baveno, far from the main tourist flows, in a hamlet where the community gathers around its church and its history. A small Piedmontese event that tells the story of popular devotion and the warmth of the hospitality found in the Ossola and Verbano areas.
