A 19th-century historical re-enactment in the heart of Baveno, on Lake Maggiore
Un Salto nel Passato is one of the most distinctive historical re-enactments in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola area of Piedmont. Held biennially in the lead-up to Christmas, it takes place in the historic center of Baveno, overlooking the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore. For one full day, the village turns into a large, living tableau reminiscent of traditional nativity scenes, immersing visitors in the simple, vibrant atmosphere of the 1800s.
The heart of the event is its meticulous reconstruction of the past, brought to life by over five hundred costumed performers. Throughout the alleys, courtyards, and small squares of the center, traditional workshops are set up, where ancient crafts are practiced live. Key highlights include:
Along the route, you will find stalls selling artisanal products, fabrics, jewelry, and items made of wood, stone, and ceramic, all purchased using Franc Bavenesiโthe currency minted specifically for the event.
Numerous inns open along the path, offering traditional dishes with simple, authentic flavors. They are the perfect place to pause between workshops and complete your immersive experience in the life of a 19th-century village.
The day concludes at dusk with the most anticipated and spectacular moment: Diamo fuoco al passato ('Let's set the past on fire'), a convivial ritual that closes the event in Piazza Matteotti, right in front of the grand fresco dedicated to the picasass, Bavenoโs historic stonecutters.
Promoted by the Un Salto nel Passato Association with the support of the Municipality of Baveno, the event involves hundreds of volunteers and is considered a symbol of the entire community's passion. For visitors, it is also a wonderful opportunity to discover Baveno, an ancient granite village nestled between the mountains and the lake, offering a panoramic view of the Borromean Islands.
The seventeenth edition of Un Salto nel Passato will be held in Baveno (Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piedmont) on Sunday, November 15, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. In case of bad weather, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday, November 22, 2026.
As per the biennial tradition, the historic center will host over five hundred costumed performers, the ancient workshops of stonecutters, blacksmiths, spinners, and other traditional trades, as well as inns serving local dishes and purchases made with Franc Bavenesi. The day will conclude in the evening with the customary Diamo fuoco al passato ritual in Piazza Matteotti.
The detailed program with performance times will be published by the Un Salto nel Passato Association and the Baveno Tourist Office in the weeks leading up to the event.
The event is held biennially during the pre-Christmas period, with continuous hours from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. In case of bad weather, a make-up date is scheduled for the following Sunday.
