About Un Salto nel Passato

Every two years, in the lead-up to Christmas, the historic center of Baveno transforms into a grand, living 19th-century tableau. Un Salto nel Passato brings hundreds of costumed performers to the streets, along with traditional workshops of stonecutters, blacksmiths, and spinners, rustic inns serving local delicacies, and a captivating finale with the 'Diamo fuoco al passato' ritual. It is one of the most beloved events in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola region of Piedmont, bringing the crafts and atmosphere of the lakeside village of yesteryear back to life.

Un Salto nel Passato: The 19th century comes alive in Baveno

Un Salto nel Passato is one of the most distinctive historical re-enactments in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola area of Piedmont. Held biennially in the lead-up to Christmas, it takes place in the historic center of Baveno, overlooking the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore. For one full day, the village turns into a large, living tableau reminiscent of traditional nativity scenes, immersing visitors in the simple, vibrant atmosphere of the 1800s.

Hundreds of performers and ancient workshops

The heart of the event is its meticulous reconstruction of the past, brought to life by over five hundred costumed performers. Throughout the alleys, courtyards, and small squares of the center, traditional workshops are set up, where ancient crafts are practiced live. Key highlights include:

  • Stonecutters and picasass, the artisans of pink granite who made Baveno world-famous
  • Blacksmiths, carpenters, and knife grinders at work in their shops
  • Laundresses, embroiderers, and wool spinners
  • Musicians, shepherds, and local historical groups

Along the route, you will find stalls selling artisanal products, fabrics, jewelry, and items made of wood, stone, and ceramic, all purchased using Franc Bavenesiโ€”the currency minted specifically for the event.

Inns and the flavors of the past

Numerous inns open along the path, offering traditional dishes with simple, authentic flavors. They are the perfect place to pause between workshops and complete your immersive experience in the life of a 19th-century village.

Diamo fuoco al passato

The day concludes at dusk with the most anticipated and spectacular moment: Diamo fuoco al passato ('Let's set the past on fire'), a convivial ritual that closes the event in Piazza Matteotti, right in front of the grand fresco dedicated to the picasass, Bavenoโ€™s historic stonecutters.

A Lake Maggiore tradition

Promoted by the Un Salto nel Passato Association with the support of the Municipality of Baveno, the event involves hundreds of volunteers and is considered a symbol of the entire community's passion. For visitors, it is also a wonderful opportunity to discover Baveno, an ancient granite village nestled between the mountains and the lake, offering a panoramic view of the Borromean Islands.
