About Bonfire Festival

The Saint Joseph's Bonfire Festival lights up the historic center of Monopoli with dozens of wood piles scattered throughout the alleys, narrow lanes, and squares of the old town. Known as "Bonfires in the alleys & ancient delicacies," it is a centuries-old tradition that welcomes the arrival of spring every March 19th, coinciding with the feast of Saint Joseph. Live folk music, street performers, pizzica groups, markets, and Apulian street food bring the Adriatic-facing village to life until late at night.

The night Monopoli lights up

Every year, around March 19th, the historic center of Monopoli (Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia) transforms into a massive open-air bonfire. The Saint Joseph's Bonfire Festival โ€” known by the slogan "Bonfires in the alleys & ancient delicacies" โ€” is one of the most cherished and well-attended traditions in this Adriatic town, drawing thousands of people into the whitewashed alleys of the old city.

The event takes place in conjunction with the Feast of Saint Joseph and is seen as a good omen for the coming spring and the end of the cold winter. At dusk, dozens of wood piles are lit simultaneously in the squares and chiassi (narrow alleys) of the village, filling the air with sparks, warmth, and the scent of burning wood.

Fires, music, and flavors in the alleys

The bonfires are scattered across the most iconic spots in the historic center: Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, Largo Plebiscito, Piazza Garibaldi, Vico Alba, Largo Castello, Largo Santa Maria, Largo San Giovanni, Piazza Palmieri, Via Mulini, Via Argento, Largo Vescovado, Vico Sant'Angelo, Via Perrini, and Via San Leonardo. Each fire becomes the heart of a festive corner, animated by live music, DJ sets, pizzica groups, street bands, fire-eaters, and street performers.

It is impossible to resist the ancient delicacies of the Apulian tradition: between one fire and the next, you can taste bombette, hanging caciocavallo cheese, orecchiette, panzerotti, Baresi popizze, spaghetti all'assassina, cones of fried food, and the essential zeppole of Saint Joseph. To complete the evening, there is a hobbyist market and the opening of churches and typically hidden corners of the village.

A festival spread throughout the city

The bonfires are not limited to the historic center: the tradition also involves the neighborhoods and districts of Monopoli, where parishes and committees light their own fires accompanied by masses, the blessing of bread, games, and tastings of local products. A collective ritual that unites popular faith, conviviality, and local identity.

Organized by the Municipality of Monopoli โ€” Department of Tourism, Culture, and Commerce, in collaboration with the Historic Center Operators Association and with the patronage of Puglia Promozione, the Bonfire Festival effectively kicks off the city's event season and represents one of the best opportunities to discover Monopoli in its most authentic form.
