The feast of the Patron Saint of fishermen, held on March 19th in Sant'Agata di Militello
On March 19th, the town of Sant'Agata di Militello, on the Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Messina (Sicily), gathers around its Patron Saint, Saint Joseph, in one of the community's most deeply rooted celebrations. The spring festival, which falls on the liturgical day dedicated to the Saint, is a moment of great public participation that blends religious rites, tradition, and folklore.
Unlike many other Sicilian towns where Saint Joseph is associated with fritters and bonfires, in Sant'Agata di Militello the Saint is primarily venerated as the protector of fishermen and the sea. This unique maritime interpretation, deeply tied to the history of the fishing village, distinguishes the festival and makes it a unique cultural heritage. The devotion dates back to the mid-19th century and is renewed every year with undiminished intensity.
The festivities open with the transfer of the statue of Saint Joseph, which remains exposed for the veneration of the faithful during the novena. On March 19th, after the high mass celebrated in the Mother Church (Duomo), the procession of the vara begins, whose imposing structure carries the sculptural group of Saint Joseph with the Baby Jesus.
The procession crosses the heart of the town, from Piazza Duomo along Via Cavour to Piazza Garibaldi, then heading towards the seaside districts, near the fishermen's homes. The day concludes with musical performances, traditional games, and a fireworks display, traditionally organized by the Russo company from Castell'Umberto. Stalls, illuminations, and gastronomic specialties enliven the town center throughout the festivities.
Saint Joseph in Sant'Agata di Militello is celebrated twice: in addition to the spring solemnity on March 19th, a second procession takes place on the second Sunday of August, when the float is turned towards the sea along the promenade for the blessing of the sea and the catch, sealing the deep bond between the community, faith, and the fishing industry.
The 2026 festivities opened on Monday, March 9th with the transfer of the Saint Joseph statue, which was exposed for the veneration of the faithful during the novena from March 10th to 18th. The climax was reached on Thursday, March 19th, the day of the Patron Saint.
The vara, adorned with twelve silver bells and carried on the shoulders of fishermen, crossed the historic center amidst cries of "Viva San Giuseppe", confirming the deep devotion of the local community to its Patron Saint.
Monday, March 9th: transfer of the Saint Joseph statue.
March 10-18: novena.
