The feast of the Patron Saint of Rosolini, featuring Sicilian carts, a votive cavalcade, and a solemn procession
The Saint Joseph Festival is the most important religious and popular event in Rosolini, a town in the province of Syracuse, in the far south-eastern corner of Sicily. Saint Joseph is the Patron Saint of the city and the titular saint of the Mother Church: his feast, celebrated during the week around March 19th, involves the entire community in a tapestry of liturgy, devotion, and folk traditions passed down through generations.
The festivities span an entire week, culminating in the weekend closest to March 19th. Among the most anticipated events:
The final day, known as the external feast, opens at dawn with cannon blasts and church bells. In the evening, the solemn procession with the artistic statue of Saint Joseph takes place through the main streets of the town, accompanied by the clergy and civil authorities. The return to Piazza Garibaldi is marked by the festive ringing of bells and a fireworks display that illuminates the night in Rosolini.
Organized by the Mother Church of Saint Joseph together with the Confraternity of Mercy and supported by the Municipality of Rosolini, the festival represents a moment of strong cohesion for the town of the carob tree. The votive cavalcade, in particular, is now at the center of renewed attention regarding animal welfare regulations, a sign of a living tradition that adapts to the times without losing its popular soul.
The 2026 festivities took place during the week of March 16th to 23rd, following the usual schedule of liturgical rites and popular events. The votive cavalcade on Saturday, March 22nd was one of the central highlights of the festival.
The 2026 edition was distinguished by stricter checks on horse welfare: inspections by the Carabinieri, ASP veterinarians, and the Municipal Police regarding health tests (specifically for equine infectious anemia) significantly reduced the number of participants compared to previous years, with the cavalcade proceeding at a walking pace. Other traditional events remained unchanged, from the parade of Sicilian carts to the auction of votive offerings, leading up to the final solemn procession with the Patron Saint's statue and the fireworks display in Piazza Garibaldi.
Rosolini is located in south-eastern Sicily, in the province of Syracuse. By car, it can be reached via the SS115 (Syracuse-Modica-Ragusa) and the motorway towards Noto. The Rosolini railway station is served by the Syracuse-Gela line. The nearest airports are Comiso (approx. 50 km) and Catania Fontanarossa (approx. 90 km).
The festivities take place during the week around March 19th, with the epicenter at the Mother Church of Saint Joseph and Piazza Garibaldi. Outdoor events (parades, cavalcade, procession) are free and open to all.
