About Saint Joseph Rosolini

Every year around March 19th, Rosolini gathers around its Patron Saint for one of the most heartfelt patronal festivals in the province of Syracuse. The Saint Joseph Festival blends religious devotion with popular tradition: the parade of decorated Sicilian carts, the spectacular votive cavalcade of horses, the collection and auction of votive offerings in Piazza Garibaldi, the solemn procession with the artistic statue of the Saint, and the fireworks that conclude the festivities. A week of rituals, brass band music, and folklore in the heart of the Val di Noto.

A patronal festival in the heart of the Val di Noto

The Saint Joseph Festival is the most important religious and popular event in Rosolini, a town in the province of Syracuse, in the far south-eastern corner of Sicily. Saint Joseph is the Patron Saint of the city and the titular saint of the Mother Church: his feast, celebrated during the week around March 19th, involves the entire community in a tapestry of liturgy, devotion, and folk traditions passed down through generations.

Rituals and traditions

The festivities span an entire week, culminating in the weekend closest to March 19th. Among the most anticipated events:

  • The parade of Sicilian carts, which departs from the Stele di Croce Santa on Via Sant'Alessandra and travels through the city streets to Piazza Garibaldi, accompanied by folk groups.
  • The votive cavalcade, a defining moment of the festival, featuring riders and caparisoned horses parading through the town streets in honor of the Saint.
  • The procession of the Child Jesus on the eve of the feast, through Via Manzoni, Via Alighieri, Via Sipione, and Corso Savoia, accompanied by the local brass band.
  • The collection and auction of votive offerings in Piazza Garibaldi, an ancient custom that links popular devotion to supporting the festival.
  • The folk parade of carts and carriages along Via Manzoni.

The day of the external feast

The final day, known as the external feast, opens at dawn with cannon blasts and church bells. In the evening, the solemn procession with the artistic statue of Saint Joseph takes place through the main streets of the town, accompanied by the clergy and civil authorities. The return to Piazza Garibaldi is marked by the festive ringing of bells and a fireworks display that illuminates the night in Rosolini.

Devotion and identity

Organized by the Mother Church of Saint Joseph together with the Confraternity of Mercy and supported by the Municipality of Rosolini, the festival represents a moment of strong cohesion for the town of the carob tree. The votive cavalcade, in particular, is now at the center of renewed attention regarding animal welfare regulations, a sign of a living tradition that adapts to the times without losing its popular soul.

Saint Joseph Rosolini — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph Festival in Rosolini took place from March 16th to 23rd, with the votive cavalcade on Saturday, March 22nd, as the most anticipated moment. The week of festivities featured traditional rituals: the Sicilian cart parade, the collection and auction of votive offerings in Piazza Garibaldi, the procession of the Child Jesus, and the solemn procession with the statue of Saint Joseph, concluded by fireworks.

The 2026 festivities took place during the week of March 16th to 23rd, following the usual schedule of liturgical rites and popular events. The votive cavalcade on Saturday, March 22nd was one of the central highlights of the festival.

The 2026 edition was distinguished by stricter checks on horse welfare: inspections by the Carabinieri, ASP veterinarians, and the Municipal Police regarding health tests (specifically for equine infectious anemia) significantly reduced the number of participants compared to previous years, with the cavalcade proceeding at a walking pace. Other traditional events remained unchanged, from the parade of Sicilian carts to the auction of votive offerings, leading up to the final solemn procession with the Patron Saint's statue and the fireworks display in Piazza Garibaldi.
