The San Francesco di Paola Festival is the most cherished event in Marzamemi, an ancient seaside village that is part of the municipality of Pachino, at the southern tip of the province of Syracuse, in Sicily. San Francesco di Paola is the patron saint of the hamlet and the protector of fishermen, and his festival blends religious devotion with maritime tradition in one of the most characteristic sea-based celebrations on the island.
The origin of the cult of San Francesco di Paola in Marzamemi is not precisely documented: according to local tradition, the devotion took root between the 16th and late 17th centuries, as the village population sought to recover after the terrible earthquake of 1693 that devastated the entire Val di Noto. Since then, the Saint has been considered the protector of the fishing community and their families.
The most anticipated moment is the sea procession. In the late afternoon, the statue of the Saint leaves the church in Piazza Regina Margherita and is taken to the Balata port and the pier, where the boats are blessed. The statue is then hoisted onto a vessel and carried in procession through the waters, escorted by a parade of boats and fishing trawlers sounding their sirens. During the procession, a wreath of flowers is cast into the sea in memory of those lost at sea. Upon returning, the statue continues in procession through the streets of the historic center until it is returned to the church.
The day begins with cannon shots fired from the port, announcing the arrival of the patron saint's festival. In the early afternoon, the traditional sea games take place at the Balata port:
In the evening, the village comes alive with musical performances and entertainment, while at midnight, fireworks over the sea conclude the festivities, illuminating the bay and the village houses.
The festival is also an opportunity to visit Marzamemi, one of the most beautiful seaside villages in Sicily, with its ancient tonnara (tuna fishery), limestone squares, and seafood restaurants overlooking the port. In August, the hamlet fills with tourists and residents who participate in large numbers in this celebration of strong local identity, organized by the Parish of San Francesco di Paola together with the Pro Loco Marzamemi and the Municipality of Pachino.
The 2026 edition of the San Francesco di Paola Festival in Marzamemi is expected, as per tradition, around mid-August. At the moment, the official dates and program have not yet been published by the organizers. The usual schedule is expected: sea games (greasy pole and boat race) at the Balata port, the evocative sea procession of the Saint, and evening fireworks. Information will be updated as soon as it is released by the Parish of San Francesco di Paola and the Pro Loco Marzamemi.
Marzamemi is a hamlet of the municipality of Pachino (SR), in the far south-east of Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the SS115 and provincial roads from Noto and Pachino; the nearest train station is in Noto, while the reference airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Comiso. During the festival, the village is closed to traffic: it is recommended to park in the outer areas and reach the center on foot.
Participation in the festival and the sea procession is free. The sea games take place at the Balata port in the afternoon, the sea procession in the late afternoon, and the fireworks at midnight. In high season, it is advisable to book restaurants and accommodation in the village well in advance.
