The patronal feast of Spadafora featuring a procession, the "dance" of the bearers, and a blessing towards the sea
The Saint Joseph Festival is the main religious and popular event in Spadafora, a coastal town in the Province of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in Sicily. Saint Joseph is the town's patron saint, and his feast, held annually on the Sunday following the third Thursday of July, draws worshippers, tourists, and locals returning home for the occasion. Devotion to the Saint has been rooted here for centuries: the Mother Church, dedicated to him, dates back to the late 16th century and houses a precious wooden statue created in 1860 by sculptor Antonio Zuccaro.
The highlight of the festivities is the Sunday procession. In the afternoon, the statue of Saint Joseph, richly adorned with flowers, is carried on the shoulders of the so-called "Magliette bianche" (White Shirts) through the main streets of the town, accompanied by civil and religious authorities, a marching band, and a crowd of devotees. The characteristic rhythmic gait of the bearers creates what the locals call the "dance" of Saint Joseph, a gesture where folklore and religiosity merge. At the end of the route, the statue is turned towards the sea to impart a blessing, a moment of great intensity that unites faith and maritime tradition, before returning to the church to the sound of bells.
Throughout the festivities, from Thursday to Sunday, Spadafora hosts a traditional market fair along the seafront and in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, featuring stalls, local products, and handicrafts. The evenings are marked by fireworks displays, which illuminate the sky over the sea at the end of the procession and again at midnight, providing one of the most scenic moments of the festival.
The Saint Joseph Festival is much more than a liturgical celebration: it is a defining event for the entire Spadafora community. A second celebration dedicated to the Saint is held every year on March 19th, with the setting up of votive altars and the distribution of traditional "blessed bread." However, it is the summer festival in the heart of July that transforms the town into a crossroads of devotion, music, and conviviality, capable of bringing generations of emigrants home and welcoming visitors to the Tyrrhenian Riviera of Messina.
The 2026 Saint Joseph Festival in Spadafora will follow the usual patronal calendar: the highlight is expected on Sunday, July 19, 2026, with the solemn procession of the wooden statue, the "dance" of the White Shirts, and the blessing imparted towards the sea. In the preceding days, from Thursday to Sunday, the seafront and the main square will host the traditional market fair. The complete program, including times for celebrations, the procession, and fireworks, will be announced by the organizers closer to the festival.
Spadafora is located along the Tyrrhenian coast of the Province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (Villafranca Tirrena exit) and the SS113 road. The Spadafora train station is served by the Messina-Palermo line.
The festivities are concentrated around the Mother Church dedicated to Saint Joseph and in the historic center; the market fair is held on the seafront and in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III.
Admission to the festival and the market fair is free. As this is a very popular summer event, it is advisable to arrive early for the Sunday procession and plan for parking in the areas surrounding the center.
