The patronal feast of the San Giovanni district in Milazzo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Feast of Saint John the Baptist is one of the most cherished events in the religious and popular tradition of Milazzo, a city in the Metropolitan City of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in northeastern Sicily. The celebration is centered in the San Giovanni district, where devotion to the Baptist has accompanied the life of the community for generations. Every year, around June 24th, the liturgical day of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, the neighborhood transforms into a grand festival space.
The most anticipated moment is the solemn procession of the Sacred Effigy of the Saint, a fine 18th-century papier-mâché statue venerated at the Sacred Heart Parish. The simulacrum, placed on a float, is carried through the streets of the district—in some sections on the shoulders of devotees—accompanied by a brass band and a crowd of the faithful. The route winds through the neighborhood streets and reaches the picturesque western waterfront, where the procession moves amidst prayer and reflection.
In the days leading up to and following the procession, Piazza San Giovanni fills with life: adorned with traditional illuminations and animated by craft stalls, sweets, and local street food, the square hosts a rich calendar of events. There is no shortage of concerts by well-known artists, food festivals dedicated to local flavors, sports tournaments, and games for children, in a festive atmosphere that involves entire families.
The festival closes with one of the spectacles most loved by the people of Milazzo: the fireworks along the western coastline, which illuminate the sky above the Tyrrhenian Sea and seal the days of celebration. It is the moment when devotion and popular joy merge into a single great collective emotion.
The Feast of Saint John the Baptist tells the most authentic story of Milazzo and Sicily: a community that recognizes itself around its patron saint, preserving rites, flavors, and customs passed down through time. For those visiting the province of Messina at the end of June, participating in this feast means immersing oneself in one of the most vibrant expressions of Sicilian popular religiosity, amidst faith, sea, and folklore.
For the 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint John the Baptist in Milazzo, definitive dates and programs have not yet been released. Following custom, the celebrations should take place at the end of June, near June 24th, with the procession of the Saint's 18th-century statue through the streets of the San Giovanni district and side events in Piazza San Giovanni. The detailed program will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the feast.
Milazzo can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (Milazzo exit). By train, the Milazzo station is served by the Tyrrhenian line; urban buses to the city center depart from the station square. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
The celebrations are concentrated in the San Giovanni district, with the epicenter in Piazza San Giovanni; the procession reaches the western waterfront.
Admission to events in the square is free. It is recommended to arrive early on concert nights and for the fireworks display. Always check dates and programs through official sources and parish channels, as they may vary from year to year.
