About Madonna della Scala Festival

Every year, between late July and early August, the Scala district in Torregrotta (Province of Messina) gathers to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Scala, the village's patron saint. The festival weaves together the community's deep Marian devotion—featuring solemn mass and a procession—with the blessing of the sea in memory of the fallen, and a rich secular program of themed nights, concerts, shows, food festivals, and popular gatherings in the squares of this town overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.

A patronal feast between faith and the sea

The Madonna della Scala Festival is the most cherished event in the Scala district of Torregrotta, a small town on the Tyrrhenian coast in the Province of Messina, Sicily. Celebrated between the final days of July and the beginning of August, the festival is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Scala, the patron saint of the village, and has long been a consolidated tradition that unites religious observance with popular culture and gastronomy.

Marian devotion and the blessing of the sea

The spiritual heart of the festival lies in the liturgical celebrations overseen by the Santa Maria della Scala parish, led by Father Francesco Cucinotta. The most solemn moment is the pontifical mass followed by a procession carrying the statue of the Madonna through the main streets of the town, concluding with the Act of Entrustment of the community to the Virgin. Particularly moving is the blessing of the sea and the boats, featuring a floral tribute in memory of those lost at sea and a commemoration of Chief Petty Officer Aurelio Visalli, recipient of the Gold Medal for Naval Valor, in the presence of the Milazzo Port Authority.

Themed nights

Alongside the religious program, the festival offers a secular calendar marked by themed nights that bring Piazza S. Maria della Scala, Piazza P. Impastato, the seafront, and Corso Sicilia to life:

  • Gold Night: Opening with a foam party and DJ set along the beach and seafront;
  • Red Night: Performances by local schools, concerts, and a food festival featuring sausage sandwiches, hot dogs, and watermelon;
  • White Night: Parade of sports associations, sand art, talent shows, and food stalls in the squares;
  • Blue Night: The religious highlight featuring solemn vespers, the blessing of the sea, performances, and tastings of local products.

Flavors and tradition

The food and wine component is a protagonist throughout the evenings, with food festivals offering sausage sandwiches, pasta served in the squares, fresh fruit, granita with biscuits, and traditional Sicilian specialties, offered in collaboration with local businesses and regional producers.

A community identity

More than just a simple village feast, the Madonna della Scala Festival is a gathering point for the inhabitants of Scala and Torregrotta, as well as for those returning to the village during the summer. The festival unites generations around Marian devotion and the memory of the town's bond with the sea, in an atmosphere of participation that defines the summer on the Messina coast.
