The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the main patronal festival of San Filippo del Mela, a town in the Mela Valley in the province of Messina, Sicily. Every year, around July 16th—the day of the liturgical memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel—the town gathers around its heavenly patron with a festival that unites popular faith, community identity, and entertainment.
The Marian devotion in San Filippo del Mela has deep historical roots, linked to the Benedictine monastery from which the village originated. Originally, the main feast was dedicated to Saint Philip the Apostle and took place in May; later, celebrations for Our Lady of Mount Carmel were held on the first Sunday of August, and from 1866 onwards, they were preceded by an annual fair along the bed of the Floripòtema stream. Today, the solemnity is fixed on July 16th. The Cathedral houses the valuable 18th-century wooden statues of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Philip of Agira, a testament to the long devotional tradition of the local community.
The festivities are preceded by the recitation of the rosary in the neighborhoods and the novena. The most solemn moment is the pontifical mass on July 16th, followed in the afternoon by the exit of the statue and the triumphal procession of the Madonna through the town streets, accompanied by the brass band. The festival traditionally closes with a fireworks display.
Among the most characteristic rituals is the handing over of the city keys: the mayor, in a public ceremony accompanied by performers and flag-wavers, symbolically entrusts the town to the protection of the Patron Saint with a solemn act of dedication. It is one of the moments most beloved by the local community.
Alongside the liturgical events, the festival committee proposes a rich secular program that enlivens Piazza Duomo and Piazza Fulci: concerts by artists of national and Sicilian renown, theatrical performances, band exhibitions, and exhibitions dedicated to the town's history. A festival that draws locals and visitors from the neighboring towns of the Mela Valley every summer.
