The patronal feast of Venetico Marina

The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is the main religious event in Venetico Marina, the coastal district of the Municipality of Venetico, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily. Every year, on July 16th, the community gathers around its patron saint for a day of intense devotion and popular celebration that attracts faithful from across the Peloritani Mountains area.

The origins of the devotion

The festival is rooted in the Carmelite tradition and the liturgical feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, celebrated by the Church on July 16th. The occasion recalls the ancient Marian devotion linked to the Scapular of Carmel and a popular piety deeply ingrained in the coastal towns of Sicily, where Our Lady of Mount Carmel has been the protector of seafarers and sailors for centuries.

The religious program

The festivities are preceded by a well-attended novena celebrated in the church of Maria Santissima del Carmelo, on Via Carmine, which prepares the community for the solemnity. The program includes:

• the novena of preparation in the days leading up to the feast;
• holy masses celebrated on July 16th;
• the solemn evening procession of the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel through the streets of Venetico Marina, accompanied by a brass band and followed by numerous faithful;
• traditional moments of popular celebration along the coastline.

Between faith and community

The procession is the heart of the festival: the float bearing the effigy of the Madonna travels through the streets of the town center and the seafront, in a journey that unites the religious dimension with the district's deep bond with the sea. The Santa Maria del Carmelo Parish, part of the Spadafora Vicariate in the Diocese of Messina, coordinates the celebrations that bring life to Venetico Marina for several days.
