A religious festival in the heart of Sicily

The Most Holy Redeemer Festival is one of the most cherished devotional events for the community of Pace del Mela, a town in the province of Messina overlooking the Sicilian Tyrrhenian coast, just a short distance from the Gulf of Milazzo. Traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday of July, the festival draws residents of the village and the surrounding areas each year to honor the Most Holy Redeemer.

The Church of the Most Holy Redeemer

The heart of the celebrations is the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer, located in the Pace Centro district. The building was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century at the behest of the wealthy landowner Antonino Lo Sciotto, on land owned by his brother Giuseppe, and was restored in 2002. For over a century, this small place of worship has served as a spiritual landmark for the district, which proudly preserves its tradition.

Rites, procession, and popular tradition

The religious program includes Holy Masses, moments of community prayer, and, as the highlight of the festivities, the solemn procession that accompanies the statue of the Redeemer through the town streets, with the active participation of the faithful. Alongside the liturgical dimension, the festival retains the convivial character typical of Sicilian patronal feasts: the lively streets, the sound of the marching band, the stalls, and the social gatherings that turn the day into a true community event.

A tradition renewed every summer

In Pace del Mela, the calendar of religious festivals is particularly rich: in addition to the feast of the Madonna of the Visitation, the town's patron saint celebrated on July 2nd, and the feast of Saint Joseph on the second Sunday of August, the Most Holy Redeemer Festival is part of a summer marked by faith and popular traditions. The Parish of Santa Maria della Visitazione publishes the detailed program of the festivities annually, renewing an appointment that binds generations together and keeps the identity of this corner of the Tyrrhenian Sicily alive.
