The patronal feast of Milena and the traditional 'tavulate di li vicchiarieddi'
The Saint Joseph Festival is the most heartfelt devotional event in Milena, a small town in the province of Caltanissetta, in the geographical heart of Sicily. Saint Joseph is the town's patron saint, and every year, around March 19th, the entire community gathers around his figure with a series of religious rites and folk traditions that date back to the 19th century. The festival is so central to the local identity that it was documented as early as the 1920s by American anthropologist Charlotte Gower Chapman in her famous study Milocca, a Sicilian Village (Milocca was the ancient name of Milena).
The core of the festival is the 'tavulate di li vicchiarieddi', or 'tables of the little old ones': ritual lunches that Milena families set up as an ex-voto, to fulfill a vow or thank the Saint for a grace received. On a small home altar, adorned with white tablecloths, the image of Saint Joseph is placed alongside seasonal fruit, oranges, vegetables, and above all, votive bread, shaped like a staff, lily, and crown—symbols of the Patriarch. Relatives, neighbors, and those in need are invited to the table; after the priest's blessing, the lunch begins.
March 19th, preceded by a triduum of preparation and masses in honor of the Saint, is the solemn day. In the afternoon, after the blessing of the tables, the statue of Saint Joseph—a work by the renowned Biangardi school—is carried in procession through the streets of Milena's historic center at dusk, accompanied by the 'G. Verdi' Musical Band Association of Milena. The day concludes with fireworks in honor of the Patron Saint.
Alongside the March festival, the second Sunday of May features the Saint Joseph of the Countryside Festival, which takes place in the Vittorio Veneto Village, in the Patini district. Here, devotion blends with rural and folk elements: mass, a procession of the statue through the village, traditional games like the 'ntinna (greasy pole), a community spaghetti lunch, and fireworks.
More than just a religious event, the Saint Joseph Festival is an intangible heritage that tells the story of Milena's rural and communal soul: the value of hospitality, sharing bread, and caring for the poor. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in inland Sicily and a living tradition passed down from generation to generation.
In 2026, Milena celebrated its Patron Saint Saint Joseph, upholding all traditional rites. After the preparatory triduum, on March 19th, families set up the 'tavulate di li vicchiarieddi' with votive bread, fruit, and traditional dishes, offered as ex-voto and blessed by the priest. In the afternoon, the statue of the Saint was carried in procession through the historic center, accompanied by the 'G. Verdi' brass band. The town's devotion to Saint Joseph was also highlighted by the local press and the community blog Milocca–Milena Libera.
