About Saint Joseph in Letojanni

Every March 19th, Letojanni, a seaside village on the Ionian coast near Messina, honors its patron saint, Saint Joseph, with its most heartfelt liturgical celebration of the year. Following a novena that begins on March 10th, the festivities culminate on the saint's day with a morning solemn mass, a procession to Piazza Angelo D'Arrigo for the blessing of the sea, and an afternoon parade of the statue through the town center. It is a celebration that weaves together devotion, culinary traditions like 'cuzzolata' and 'zeppole di San Giuseppe', and the maritime identity of this community overlooking the Ionian Sea.

The Patronal Feast of Letojanni

In Letojanni, a lively seaside town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, Saint Joseph is the patron saint, and his feast day on March 19th is the most significant religious and identity-defining event of the year. Unlike the more folkloric summer 'Festa a Mare' held on the first Sunday of August with its boat procession, the March celebration retains the intimate and solemn character of a liturgical feast, deeply rooted in the life of the parish and the entire community.

The Preparatory Novena

The festivities span more than a single day: they are preceded by the traditional novena, which begins around March 10th. For nine days, the Mother Church of Saint Joseph hosts a rich program of Eucharistic celebrations, prayers, and moments of reflection that guide the faithful toward the feast day, marking the anticipation with daily services.

The Saint's Day

On March 19th, the day begins early with festive bell ringing and the characteristic mortar fire announcing the solemnity. In the late morning, a Solemn High Mass is celebrated, presided over by the highest religious authorities of the diocese and attended by civil and military officials, the confraternity, and local groups. Following the service, the procession reaches Piazza Angelo D'Arrigo, overlooking the seafront, where the blessing of the sea and the act of entrusting the community to Patriarch Saint Joseph take place—a gesture that renews the bond between the village and its maritime vocation.

The Procession of the Statue

The highlight occurs in the afternoon, when the statue of Saint Joseph is carried in procession through the town streets. Accompanied by the confraternity, the brass band, and a crowd of faithful, the saint travels through the center of Letojanni amidst prayers and popular devotion; upon returning to the church, a final solemn mass concludes the day.

Faith and Traditions

The festival is also an occasion for conviviality and local flavors. Among the most beloved traditions are the cuzzolata and the essential zeppole di San Giuseppe, the symbolic pastry of the occasion, prepared and shared by the Confraternity of Saint Joseph. In the days surrounding March 19th, the calendar is sometimes enriched with community events, youth activities, and charity initiatives, blending religious observance, folk culture, and village life.

An Experience to Cherish

The March Saint Joseph Festival is a precious opportunity to discover the authentic soul of Letojanni, far from the summer tourist season, and to immerse yourself in the traditions of the Ionian coast between Taormina and Messina. It is promoted by the Parish and the Confraternity of Saint Joseph with the support of the Municipality of Letojanni.
