The patronal feast of Forza d'Agrò, held every September 14th in the medieval village overlooking the Ionian Sea
Perched on a rocky spur over 400 meters above sea level, overlooking the Ionian Sea and the coast of Taormina, the medieval village of Forza d'Agrò, in the province of Messina (Sicily), experiences its most heartfelt moment every year with the Santissimo Crocifisso Festival, the patronal feast celebrated on September 14th, the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
At the heart of the devotion is the image of the Santissimo Crocifisso, a fine 14th-century painted panel by an unknown artist, considered one of the most important works of Sicilian painting from that era. The image is kept in the Mother Church of Santissima Annunziata e Assunta, the town's cathedral, and for the occasion, it is displayed on the high altar for the adoration of the faithful.
The heart of the festival is the evening procession, which begins at sunset following the Solemn Holy Mass. The Crucifix is carried out of the church, welcomed by the jubilant cries of the faithful, the sound of festive bells, and fireworks, as it travels through the narrow streets of the medieval historic center, with balconies and windows adorned with characteristic red drapes. The Confraternity of the SS. Trinità, the clergy, and local authorities participate in the procession, accompanied by a marching band; the pageant concludes with the return of the image to the church and a final fireworks display.
Religious celebrations are preceded by a novena in preparation for the feast, featuring Masses and the recitation of the Holy Rosary in the cathedral. Alongside the liturgical events, the patronal feast also features the traditional games of the SS. Crocifisso Palio, as well as performances and music in the square that bring the village to life during the evening hours.
Recognized as one of the most evocative spots in the Ionian area of Messina and made famous by various film scenes, Forza d'Agrò welcomes residents, returning emigrants, and visitors during the festival, in an atmosphere that weaves together popular faith, tradition, and the identity of the Messina province community.
The 2026 Santissimo Crocifisso Festival in Forza d'Agrò is confirmed for Monday, September 14, 2026, the fixed date for the patronal feast linked to the anniversary of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including the times for religious celebrations, the procession, and civil events (SS. Crocifisso Palio, shows, and music in the square), has not yet been published by the organizers. The structure of the festival follows the one consolidated over the years: a preparatory novena with Masses and Rosary in the cathedral, Solemn Holy Mass, evening procession of the Crucifix through the streets of the historic center, and fireworks displays.
