Saint Joseph Festival in Pietraperzia

A tradition revived every spring

The Saint Joseph Festival in Pietraperzia, in the province of Enna, is far more than a religious observance: it is a collective ritual that has united the entire town around the figure of the Patriarch for generations. Celebrated near March 19th, it traces its roots back to the 18th century, when Abbot Giuseppe Nicolò Baldassarre Russo, originally from nearby Barrafranca, set the Gospel episode of the Flight into Egypt to verse. The first documented reenactment in Pietraperzia dates back to 1924, and since then, this sacred performance has become the community's hallmark.

The reenactment of the Flight into Egypt

The most anticipated moment is the living reenactment of the Flight into Egypt. The Holy Family parades through the streets of the historic center: the Madonna riding a donkey, preceded by the Angel, while three costumed actors portray Herod's soldiers, who ride on horseback to the church square. When the soldiers announce the order to kill the Child, the Angel intervenes with the famous invocation "Deh, fermate la barbara mano!" (Oh, stay your barbarous hand!), which dissuades them and forces them to ask for forgiveness and retreat. Only then can the Holy Family approach the banquet table.

The Saint Joseph banquet

The devotional heart of the festival is the tavolata di San Giuseppe, a large votive table spread with traditional dishes prepared by local families. According to tradition, three needy people representing the Holy Family are invited to sit and enjoy the specialties offered by the residents. The blessing of the table, symbolically bestowed by the Child Jesus, is one of the most moving moments of the day and encapsulates the spirit of charity and sharing associated with the cult of Saint Joseph in Sicily.

Processions, brass band, and fireworks

The main day is marked by Holy Masses at the Mother Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the church of Santa Maria di Gesù, the sound of the brass band accompanying the characters, the procession of the Holy Family at noon, and in the evening, the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Joseph. To conclude, fireworks illuminate the square of the Mother Church.
