The patronal feast of Faggiano featuring the focara, mattre, and processions
In the small town of Faggiano, in the province of Taranto, the Saint Joseph Festival is the most anticipated event of the year. Saint Joseph is the town's patron saint, and his feast day on March 19th brings the entire community together for a series of religious celebrations and folk traditions spanning several days. The festival is organized by the local parish, led by Father Francesco Santoro, with the support of the Municipality of Faggiano and the participation of all its citizens.
The most evocative heart of the festival is the focara, the large devotional bonfire that burns in the town square. Its lighting is preceded by an ancient, collective ritual: the procession of the bundles, known in the local dialect as "Li mannucchi ti San Giseppu". Children, families, and carts loaded with wood parade through the streets, carrying the branches that will fuel the fire. After the parish priest's blessing, the focara is lit, accompanied by fireworks in a moment of strong popular participation that combines devotion and spectacle.
One of the most characteristic traditions is that of the mattre, altars and tables set up in private homes and the main square. On hand-embroidered tablecloths, traditional dishes are displayedโnot to be eaten, but offered to the Saint as a sign of devotion. Around this gesture, solidarity tables are formed, convivial moments that renew the spirit of community and hospitality linked to the figure of Saint Joseph, guardian of the family and patron of workers.
As in many Apulian patronal festivals, music accompanies every day in Faggiano. The town streets come alive with the marching band, while the main evening features grand band concerts performed by prestigious ensembles from the Salento tradition. There is no shortage of musical performances in the square, illuminations lighting up the streets, and fireworks that conclude the celebrations in a festive atmosphere that engages both young and old.
Located between Taranto and Salento, Faggiano proudly preserves this heritage of spring rites which, like the Saint Joseph Festival, mark the transition from winter to the new season. The festival represents an authentic opportunity to discover the popular traditions of the province of Taranto and the identity of a community that gathers every year around its patron saint, united in faith, gastronomy, and sharing.
The 2026 Saint Joseph Festival in Faggiano was developed under the theme "Peacemakers," with the community called to be artisans and builders of peace following the patron's example. After the liturgical solemnity of March 19th, civil and devotional festivities continued over the weekend with the most anticipated moments of popular tradition.
The event was organized by the parish led by Father Francesco Santoro, in collaboration with the Municipality of Faggiano and Mayor Antonio Cardea, who renewed the gesture of handing over the city keys to the Saint.
The festival takes place every year around March 19th, the feast day of Saint Joseph, with celebrations spread over several days between the eve and the following weekend.
Faggiano can be reached by car via the SS7ter, a few kilometers from Taranto. The reference railway station is Taranto, from where you can continue by bus or car to the town center.
All celebrations and shows are free to attend.
