Bonfires, traditional tables, and the Last Supper re-enactment in the heart of the Taranto area
Every year, in the town of Fragagnano (province of Taranto, Puglia), the community renews the Saint Joseph Festival, one of the most cherished events on the local calendar. To avoid overlapping with celebrations in nearby San Marzano di San Giuseppe, the festivities are held ahead of the traditional March 19th date, concentrating into two intense days of religious rites, rural traditions, and community gatherings.
The festival opens with the firing of characteristic "colpi oscuri" (dark shots) and holy masses in the mother church and the Church of the Carmine. One of the most spectacular moments is the lighting of the great bonfire: a long procession, accompanied by drummers, carries bundles of wood toward the former sports hall area, where the fire is lit in the evening alongside a fireworks display. Sunday is dedicated to the solemn gala procession with the statue of Saint Joseph, which winds through the town streets accompanied by the "Cittร de Fragagnano" marching band.
The heart of the devotion is the blessing of the "mattre", the lavishly set tables arranged along the streets and in front of homes. It is an ancient gesture of charity and sharing: families prepare bread and traditional dishes in honor of the Saint, offered as a symbol of hospitality to the needy, according to a tradition passed down from generation to generation.
The most anticipated event is the "Rite of the Saints", a evocative re-enactment of the Last Supper staged in the Church of the Carmine. Nine characters sit around a table: Saint Joseph, recognizable by his flowering staff, presides over the banquet, while thirteen ritual dishes with strong symbolic value are servedโbread, fava beans, salt cod, fried cauliflower, and other traditional rural dishes. The rite, organized by the Pro Loco of Fragagnano and directed by Alfredo Traversa, creator of the "Teatro della Fede in Puglia," combines faith, collective memory, and popular culture in a moment of deep participation.
With the patronage of the Puglia Region, the Municipality of Fragagnano, and UNPLI Puglia, the Saint Joseph Festival represents a precious piece of the intangible heritage of the Taranto area and the Salento delle Murge. Between the sacred and the popular, it is an authentic opportunity to experience the identity of a village that proudly guards its rituals. All events are free to attend.
The 2026 Saint Joseph Festival was held in Fragagnano on March 14 and 15, ahead of the traditional March 19th date. On Saturday afternoon, after the "colpi oscuri" and holy mass, the procession accompanied by the "Tamburini del barone di Freganius" carried the wood bundles toward the bonfire, which was lit at 8:30 PM with a fireworks display by the Pirotecnica Cavour company from Palma Campania. Sunday was dedicated to holy masses, the blessing of the "mattre", and the solemn 4:30 PM procession with the "Cittร di Fragagnano" band. The highlight of the festival, on Sunday the 15th at 6:45 PM in the Church of the Carmine, was the 19th edition of the Rite of the Saints organized by the Pro Loco, directed by Alfredo Traversa.
Throughout Sunday: "Cittร di Fragagnano" marching band.
