Patronal celebrations featuring the Marzocco coronation, historical re-enactment, and music
June 24th is the most significant date of the year in San Giovanni Valdarno, located in the heart of the upper Valdarno valley, in the province of Arezzo (Tuscany). On this day, the town celebrates its Patron Saint, Saint John the Baptistโfrom whom the city takes its nameโwith a rich program of events weaving together tradition, art, culture, and civic pride. In 2026, the celebrations will extend for the first time over four days, from June 20th to 24th, also joining the national Music Festival circuit.
The symbolic heart of the festival is the coronation of the Marzocco in Piazza Cavour: the Mayor places a golden iron crown, embellished with colorful gems and crafted by artist Luciano Mori, on the head of the lion. The Marzocco, a lion symbolizing strength and the Florentine roots of San Giovanni, evokes an ancient tradition brought to light by historical research conducted on the pages of the Memorie storiche della Terra di San Giovanni nel Valdarno superiore by Francesco Polverini (1914).
On the afternoon of June 24th, the historic center comes alive with a historical re-enactment organized by the Liberarte association: over forty costumed figures parade through the city streets starting from Palazzo d'Arnolfo. The procession culminates in a symbolic exchange of gifts between the Mayor and the Rector of the Pieve, followed by the reading of the chapters and a solemn Holy Mass celebrated in the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista. The re-enactment is inspired by historical sources detailing how the festival was celebrated in ancient times, when the historic bell-ringer of Palazzo d'Arnolfo would summon the authorities to form the procession.
Among the most evocative rituals is the gathering of the Water of Saint John, which takes place on the eve of the patronal feast in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, involving the placement of flowers and wild aromatic herbs; on the morning of June 24th, the water is blessed and made available to citizens for the symbolic gesture tied to popular tradition.
The 2026 program complements religious and civic celebrations with numerous cultural events: piano recitals and chamber concerts in the Sala La Nonziata, a medieval miniature workshop at the Basilica Museum, a medieval concert by the Cappella Semifonti ensemble at Palazzo d'Arnolfo, as well as a treasure hunt and historical archery demonstrations designed for families. The festival concludes with the traditional Concert by the Municipal Band in Piazza Masaccio.
The Patronal Feast is much more than a religious anniversary: it is an occasion for collective memory that involves the entire community of San Giovanni Valdarno and the many visitors who arrive each year in this Tuscan village, founded as a "new land" by Florence between the 13th and 14th centuries.
For the first time, the celebrations for the patron saint of San Giovanni Valdarno span four days, from June 20th to 24th, 2026, featuring music, tradition, and historical memory, with the structured inclusion of the Music Festival in the program.
San Giovanni Valdarno is easily accessible by train (station on the Florence-Arezzo-Rome line) and by car via the A1 motorway, Valdarno exit. Events take place in the historic center, which is within walking distance of the station.
Celebrations and outdoor events are free of charge. Some activities require booking and are fee-based, such as the "A Miniature for Saint John" workshop at the Basilica Museum (35 euros, reduced 25 euros; mandatory booking at +39 334 9413417).
