The patronal festival of Pescosansonesco

The Saint John the Baptist Festival is the most cherished event in Pescosansonesco, a small village in the province of Pescara, Abruzzo, nestled at an altitude of approximately 540 meters on a rocky spur within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Saint John the Baptist is the local patron saint, and every year on June 24th, he is celebrated along the village streets with religious ceremonies and ancient rituals.

Solstitial rites of water and fire renewal

What makes the Pescosansonesco festival unique is its connection to the summer solstice. In the days surrounding the solstice, between June 20th and 24th, the ancient rite of water and fire renewal is performed, where Christian elements and pre-Christian customs merge into a single calendar of symbolic gestures.

• The blessing of the water: Water intended for the following year's baptisms is consecrated in a gesture of spiritual renewal for the community.
• The fire jump: Large solstitial bonfires, symbols of the sun, are lit. Popular tradition attributes purifying and health-giving properties to them, as well as protection against witches and spells.

According to local belief, on the night between June 23rd and 24th, the head of Saint John the Beheaded appears in the east at sunrise—a detail that weaves devotion to the saint with the magic of the shortest night of the year.

The 'comparatico' and the 'ramajette'

The Saint John festival in Pescosansonesco is also a celebration of solidarity and mutual support. On this occasion, the comparatico is celebrated—a rite that binds compari and comari (godparents/friends) with a bond often considered stronger than kinship, based on the moral obligation to support one another in times of need. This bond is sealed by the exchange of small flower bouquets, known in the local dialect as ramajette.

A village between history and devotion

Pescosansonesco is a village with an ancient history dating back to the Middle Ages. Marked in the 20th century by the 1915 earthquake and a 1934 landslide that severely damaged its original core, the village maintains a strong identity linked to its traditions. It is also the birthplace of Blessed Nunzio Sulprizio (1817-1836), a young man later proclaimed a saint, to whom a sanctuary is dedicated at the highest point of the village, housing his relics.
