The patronal feast in the Gran Sasso village that bears her name
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Saint Lucy Festival is the patronal feast of Villa Santa Lucia degli Abruzzi, a tiny municipality in the province of L'Aquila, nestled at an altitude of 900 meters on the southern slopes of the Gran Sasso, at the southern entrance to the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. The bond between the village and its patron saint is ancient: a papal bull from Pope Pasquale II, dating back to around the year 1000, already mentions the church of Saint Lucy, which gave the entire settlement its name. Celebrating the saint here means celebrating the very identity of the community.
Saint Lucy, a virgin and martyr born in Syracuse in 281, is venerated as the protector of eyesight and the bringer of light. It is no coincidence that her feast day falls on December 13th, during the darkest days of the year, and is celebrated throughout Italy as a festival of light heralding Christmas. In Abruzzo, the cult of the Syracusan martyr is deeply felt, and Villa Santa Lucia is perhaps its most emblematic example, carrying her name etched into its history.
The festival is an opportunity to rediscover an authentic village off the beaten path, permanently inhabited by just over a hundred people. The area preserves twenty-five perfectly maintained dry-stone tholos huts, a testament to pastoral civilization, alongside several ancient churches. The local cuisine reflects traditional Apennine peasant fare: sagne e fagioli (pasta and beans), ndritgli, cheese meatballs, and fried pizza are staples of the festive days.
In Villa Santa Lucia degli Abruzzi, the patron saint is honored twice a year: the main liturgical feast on December 13th and a summer celebration on August 12th. During the summer, when the village is repopulated by vacationers and returning emigrants, it experiences a second festive moment alongside celebrations for Saint Charles (August 14th) and Saint Roch (August 16th). The winter festival on December 13th remains the spiritual heart of the year, featuring a solemn mass and a procession of the saint's statue through the streets of the mountain village.
For December 13, 2026, Villa Santa Lucia degli Abruzzi is preparing to celebrate its patron saint, Saint Lucy. As of the date of this search, the official program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published; according to the village's custom, the occasion includes a solemn mass and the procession of the saint's statue. It is recommended to check the times with the Municipality or the parish as the date approaches.
The festival takes place in Villa Santa Lucia degli Abruzzi (AQ), around the church of Saint Lucy in the village center.
By car: Take the A24/A25 exit at Bussi-Popoli or L'Aquila Est, then follow local roads towards the Tirino Valley; the village is located between Ofena and Castel del Monte at an altitude of 900 meters. Please exercise caution regarding winter weather, as snow and ice are possible in December.
Religious celebrations are free to attend. For information: Municipality of Villa Santa Lucia degli Abruzzi, tel. +39 0862 956110.
