About Saint Irene

Every year at the end of June, the village of Catignano gathers around the Sanctuary of Saint Irene ai Cappuccini to celebrate the translation of the martyr's relics. A religious and folk festival that combines processions, solemn rites, brass band music, and moments of conviviality in the heart of the Nora Valley, in the province of Pescara. Housed since 1847 in a side chapel of the Romanesque church, the relics draw faithful and pilgrims from across the Abruzzo region for two days of devotion and tradition.

The Saint Irene Festival in Catignano

The Saint Irene Festival is the most deeply felt religious event in Catignano, a small village in the Nora Valley in the province of Pescara, Abruzzo. Every year at the end of June, the community gathers around the Sanctuary of Saint Irene ai Cappuccini to commemorate the translation of the martyr's relics, an event that has made this site a destination for devout pilgrimage.

History and relics

Saint Irene was martyred between the 3rd and 4th centuries. Her relics were retrieved from the Catacombs of Priscilla in Rome in 1802 and entrusted in 1834 to Father Enrico, a friar originally from Catignano. The saint's body and part of the funeral goods, including a vial containing her blood, were transported by train from Rome to Cittaducale and then carried on foot by the faithful to Catignano. Since 1847, the relics have rested in a side chapel of the Capuchin church, next to a marble plaque also originating from the Roman catacombs.

The sanctuary

The sanctuary, dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and known as the Church of Saint Irene, is a fine example of Abruzzese Romanesque architecture, built between the 11th and 12th centuries by Benedictine monks and entrusted to the Capuchin friars in 1579. Declared a national monument in 1950, the church opens into three wide naves marked by two rows of large pillars, immersed in a landscape of cypress trees that enhances its atmosphere of contemplation.

The celebration

The festival takes place over two days, traditionally on June 28th and 29th, featuring liturgical rites, the solemn procession with the saint's statue, musical accompaniment by a brass band, and the traditional civil festivities that enliven the village. The recurrence specifically celebrates the arrival of the relics in Catignano, the heart of local popular devotion.

In the Catignano summer calendar

The Saint Irene Festival is part of the rich Luci d'Estate (Summer Lights) program, the summer festival promoted by the Municipality of Catignano together with the Pro Loco, which offers cultural, musical, sports, and food and wine events from June to September, including the well-known Summer Truffle Festival. The patronal feast represents the most iconic moment of this calendar, where faith, tradition, and community intertwine in the evocative setting of the Abruzzo countryside.

Saint Irene โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Saint Irene Festival took place on June 28th and 29th, as part of the 34th edition of the Luci d'Estate summer program by the Municipality of Catignano. Two days of popular devotion featuring the procession, liturgical rites at the Capuchin sanctuary, and traditional civil festivities in the Nora Valley village.

The 2026 Saint Irene Festival was held in Catignano on June 28th and 29th, concluding the June schedule of the Luci d'Estate program, now in its 34th edition. The community gathered around the Sanctuary of Saint Irene ai Cappuccini to celebrate the translation of the martyr's relics, with the solemn procession, religious rites, and moments of celebration that renew the devotion of the Pescara village in Abruzzo every year.
