The patronal feast of Vicari featuring a historical cavalcade, the battle with the dragon, and the Almond Festival
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Saint George Martyr is the patron saint of Vicari, an ancient village in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, resting at the foot of a Norman-era castle in the San Leonardo river valley. Devotion to the warrior saint, a symbol of courage and faith, has accompanied the life of the Vicari community for centuries, culminating in the festivities that bring the historic center to life, traditionally in May.
The heart of the festival is the Historical Cavalcade in honor of Saint George: a procession of knights in period costumes who, riding horses adorned for the occasion, traverse the characteristic alleys of the medieval village. The cavalcade evokes the image of the saintly knight and represents one of the most anticipated and photographed moments of the entire event, drawing visitors and enthusiasts from neighboring towns.
Among the most evocative events is the historical performance ยซSaint George defeats evilยป, a theatrical depiction of the saint's life and martyrdom that stages the famous battle with the dragon, an allegory of the triumph of good over evil. The show, set against the backdrop of the historic center, combines acting, costumes, and a vibrant atmosphere with a strong visual impact.
The patronal festivities are intertwined with the Almond Festival, which celebrates one of the area's agricultural gems. Throughout the town, visitors can taste traditional almond-based sweets, including passavolanti โ a typical Vicari pastry made with almonds, sugar, eggs, flour, and cinnamon โ alongside primamuri, sasameli, and cubbaita, a nougat of Arab origin. The White Night rounds out the program with performances by folk groups, street bands, jugglers, and guided tours of the artistic heritage and the castle of Vicari.
Visiting Vicari during the Saint George festival means immersing yourself in a village with ancient charm, dominated by the remains of the castle and crossed by medieval alleys that preserve traces of Arab and Norman rule. The event, organized by the San Giorgio Martire Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Vicari, combines religious devotion, historical re-enactment, and gastronomic culture into a single identity-defining celebration.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Saint George Martyr Festival in Vicari has not yet been published. The event is expected to feature, as per tradition, the Historical Cavalcade with knights in period costumes, the re-enactment of the battle between Saint George and the dragon, and the Almond Festival with the village's typical sweets. The dates will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
Vicari is located in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Palermo. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (exit toward SS121), continuing along the San Leonardo valley. The most convenient train station is Roccapalumba-Alia, which is connected to the regional network; the reference airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino.
The patronal festivities traditionally take place in May, between the third and fourth week. It is recommended to check the program and updated dates with the Municipality of Vicari or the San Giorgio Martire Association.
Wear comfortable shoes for exploring the alleys and the climb to the castle. Do not miss the chance to taste the passavolanti and the almond sweets.
