The patron saint's feast in the alpine hamlet of Bagneri, in the Elvo Valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Saint Bernard Patronal Feast in Bagneri is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of popular traditions in the Biella region. It takes place in the picturesque hamlet of Bagneri, part of the Municipality of Muzzano in the province of Biella, a small alpine settlement perched on the slopes of the Elvo Valley, in Piedmont. Every year, on a Sunday in June, over three hundred people travel up to the village to honor the Patron Saint and renew a bond that unites residents, former inhabitants, and friends of the community.
The heart of the festival lies in its religious and communal dimension. The morning begins with a procession and the solemn Holy Mass in honor of Saint Bernard, celebrated around 11:00 AM, accompanied by the parish priest, the mayor of Muzzano, and the year's priors. Immediately following the celebration, the village transforms into a large space for conviviality: the aperitif and the community lunch bring together over two hundred diners every year to enjoy traditional mountain dishes. In the afternoon, a final moment of prayer is held with the blessing of the children.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Bagneri, recognized as one of the alpine hamlets of the Biella area. In the afternoon, you can visit the Ecomuseum of Mountain Civilization, part of the Biellese Museum Network, and take a stroll through the stone houses of the village, which preserve the memory of the peasant and mountain life of the past. The day thus becomes a journey into the traditions and heritage of the Piedmontese mountains.
Behind the festival is the tireless work of the Amici di Bagneri ODV association, which for over twenty-five years has been dedicated to the care and promotion of the village, with the invaluable help of the AGESCI scout groups of the Biella area. The Saint Bernard feast is not just a liturgical recurrence: it is the tangible sign of a community that, despite being far from major centers, continues to gather to keep the identity of a place alive. For those visiting the Municipality of Muzzano and the Piedmont Region, it is the perfect occasion to experience the authenticity of a mountain village festival.
