Three days of faith, tradition, and entertainment in San Cesario di Lecce
In the heart of Salento, just a few kilometers from the provincial capital, the parish of Saint Anthony of Padua in San Cesario di Lecce (Province of Lecce, Puglia) celebrates its patron saint every year with a festival that blends religious devotion with popular conviviality. June 13th, the liturgical feast day of the Saint of Miracles, is the centerpiece of three days of events that involve the entire neighborhood and attract families, worshippers, and visitors from across the region.
The most heartfelt moments are religious: the preparatory thirteen-day novena, solemn masses attended by the Archbishop of Lecce, the transfer of the saint's statue, and the procession that winds through the town streets amidst crowds, illuminations, and the sound of the brass band. After each celebration, the blessed bread of Saint Anthony is distributed—an ancient gesture of charity toward the poor, a virtue the Franciscan saint embodied.
Alongside the spiritual dimension, the festival features a rich secular program organized by the parish community with the support of the Municipality of San Cesario di Lecce. The true highlight of the community's identity is the "Corrida - Dilettanti allo sbaraglio", an amateur talent competition now in its many editions, which brings Largo Forcignanò to life with laughter, whistles, and trumpets. The schedule is completed by musical and comedy shows, workshops for children, tournaments (such as the historic foosball tournament), the parish raffle, and the evening fireworks display.
No Salento festival is complete without its local flavors: the food stalls set up around the parish offer traditional pittule, fries, sandwiches, and drinks, turning the evenings into a grand moment of outdoor sharing under the festive lights.
At the end of May, the Saint Anthony parish also hosts the "Popoli in festa" initiative, which serves as an opening to the festive season by transforming San Cesario into a multicultural village: a testament to the welcoming and supportive spirit that characterizes the entire patronal festival.
The 2026 edition, themed "three days of faith, tradition, and entertainment," enlivened the parish of Saint Anthony of Padua and Largo Forcignanò in San Cesario di Lecce from June 12 to 14, with a thanksgiving mass and the parish raffle drawing closing the festivities on Saturday, June 20.
