A winter festival in the heart of the Tiber Valley

In Morlupo, a village of just over eight thousand inhabitants north of Rome, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital and the Lazio region, the month of January features a fixed appointment: the Saint Anthony Abbot Festival. It is one of the most cherished traditions for the community, celebrated on the weekend closest to January 17th, the liturgical day dedicated to the Egyptian hermit saint venerated throughout Italy as the protector of animals and the patron of the farming world.

The festival is not just a religious rite: it is a moment of collective identity where the town's agricultural memory, popular devotion, and community life intertwine. The organization is entrusted to the Association of the Brothers of Saint Anthony Abbot, which involves confraternities, historical groups, and local volunteers every year.

The Great Fire, a symbol of purification

The most evocative moment is the lighting of the Great Fire in Piazza Giovanni XXIII. The Saint Anthony bonfire belongs to an ancient tradition widespread across the peninsula: the fire burning in the winter night represents purification, the protection of homes and stables, and the anticipation of the coming spring. In Morlupo, the flame is blessed at the end of the procession, when the statue of the saint, carried on shoulders through the alleys of the historic center, reaches the square.

The procession is led by the Confraternity of the Crucifix, followed by the "Mimmi Rocchi" Historical Pageant of Morlupo with its period costumes and the Morlupo City Drummers, whose rhythm marks the pace along the entire route. In the most elaborate editions, the program expands to include historical re-enactments and chivalric games, recalling the village's medieval and Renaissance past.

The blessing of the animals and the "Cani da Oscar"

Sunday is the day for animals. In Piazza Giovanni XXIII, the blessing of the animals takes place, an event attended by families with dogs, cats, horses, and farm animals: a simple rite that renews the ancient bond between humans, beasts, and the land. In the afternoon, the atmosphere lightens up with "Cani da Oscar", an original beauty pageant reserved primarily for mixed-breed dogs, held in Piazza Armando Diaz to reward the town's most charming four-legged friends.

Flavors: the Pulentata and the blessed bread rolls

As in any respectable Lazio festival, food plays a leading role. Saturday evening is dedicated to the "Pulentata with pork ribs and sausages", polenta topped with ribs and sausages served in the square: a simple and generous winter dish, an occasion for conviviality for residents and visitors alike. Among the most traditional gestures is the distribution to the population of blessed bread rolls, small loaves linked to the devotion to the saint and the protection of the home.
