In the town of Riano, a village in the Metropolitan City of Rome overlooking the Tiber Valley, the Pangiallo and Polenta Festival has become the official kick-off to the Christmas season. Organized by the Pro Loco Riano Association with the support of the local municipality, the event fills Piazza Piombino and the narrow streets of the historic center, right beneath the Castello Baronale Ludovisi Boncompagni, transforming them for a full weekend into a journey of flavors, lights, and popular traditions.

Pangiallo, the symbolic cake of the solstice

Pangiallo (or Roman pangiallo) is one of the oldest desserts in the Lazio region. Tradition dictates that it be kneaded with dried fruit, honey, and candied citron, then baked and covered with an egg wash that gives it its characteristic golden color. This yellow hue is no coincidence—it recalls the return of light after the winter solstice, a ritual rooted in ancient Rome. In Riano, pangiallo has become a true symbol of collective identity, to the point that the town refers to itself as the «Town of Pangiallo» and has dedicated conferences and study days to it.

A distinctive feature of Riano is the historical component of the festival: the costumed re-enactment brings the village to life with performers, flag-wavers, and musicians, while the Archers of San Giorgio da Riano organize a national archery competition that attracts clubs from all over Italy. Over the years, guest groups such as the Flag-wavers and Musicians of Monterubbiano have also performed, confirming the supra-regional reach the event has built.

Quality Festival and solidarity

The Riano festival has earned the «Quality Festival» (Sagra di Qualità) mark from the UNPLI (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy), a recognition awarded to events that guarantee product authenticity, sustainability, safety, and food hygiene. It is not just a feast for the palate: some editions have donated proceeds to research on Ceroid Lipofuscinosis, a rare genetic disease, giving the event a charitable value appreciated by the entire community.
