The Saint Anthony Abbot Bonfire is one of the most evocative winter events in the municipality of Tione degli Abruzzi, in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of the mountainous Abruzzo region. Every year, on the evening of January 17th, the small hamlet of Santa Maria del Ponte gathers around the great ritual fire lit on the village square in honor of the patron saint of animals and farmers.

A deep-rooted rural tradition

Saint Anthony Abbot, an Egyptian monk who lived in the 4th century and is considered the father of Christian monasticism, is venerated as the protector of domestic animals and the rural world. The festival is rooted in a centuries-old devotion that has remained almost intact here, at the foot of the Sirente massif and along the Aterno River. The village, dominated by the striking Collegiate Church of Santa Maria del Ponte, maintains a profound bond with the land and the seasonal cycles.

The pyre: a ten-meter charcoal kiln

The heart of the festival is the imposing bonfire, a structure with a characteristic conical shape, similar to a charcoal kiln, which can exceed ten meters in height. Construction begins about a week earlier and involves volunteers and residents of the hamlet: logs and branches are arranged in concentric circles starting from the center, alternating longitudinal and vertical layers around a central opening that acts as a chimney for ignition. Oak and beech wood are primarily used, while broom, juniper, brushwood, and dry kindling are placed in the center to start the combustion.

The blessing of the animals

The celebration begins with the parish priest imparting the blessing of animals and work tools: an ancient rite that is not only an act of devotion but also a collective moment that renews the deep bond between humanity and nature. The fire then takes on a symbolic value of purification, protection from evil, and rebirth, ideally marking the transition from winter to spring.

Around the flames, there is no shortage of traditional dishes, the genuine flavors of Abruzzo's rustic cuisine: pork rinds and beans, sagne and beans, and grilled sausages, which captivate the palate with their simplicity. Participating in the bonfire means making authentic contact with the community, in a unique blend of folklore, spirituality, and intimate atmosphere.

Organization

The festival is organized by the Santa Maria del Ponte Cultural and Recreational Association, a non-profit organization created to preserve the local cultural heritage and enliven village life with events throughout the year, from the Polenta Festival to Carnival.
