The ancient night-time ploughing competition of Rocca di Mezzo, on the Altopiano delle Rocche
The Gara del Solco is the most iconic event in Rocca di Mezzo, a village on the Altopiano delle Rocche in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo and the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. It is considered the oldest ploughing competition in Italy and the only one that takes place entirely at night: a centuries-old ritual that attracts locals, returning emigrants, and curious visitors from across the region every year.
The first written records date back to 1625, when the competition was documented in the parish's Capitular Acts. According to local tradition, the challenge began as a community vow, offered in thanksgiving for surviving a plague that threatened the L'Aquila area. Since then, the Gara del Solco has been repeated from generation to generation: in 2025, the village celebrated its 400th edition, a milestone that makes it one of the longest-running intangible heritages of the central Apennines.
Teams set off from the village square and gather at dusk on the slopes of Monte Rotondo. The lighting of a beacon at the highest point of the village, at San Calvario, next to the church bell tower, signals the start of the competition. In the darkness of the night, each team uses a ploughโonce pulled by oxen, now by tractorsโto trace a furrow about three kilometres long, trying to keep it as straight as possible by using that single distant light as a reference. At dawn, a jury evaluates the lines traced and declares the team that created the straightest furrow the winner, taking into account the quality of the ploughing and any corrections made along the way.
The competitive aspect is accompanied by a religious one: on Sunday, the village gathers for a procession and Holy Mass, with the winners holding the municipal banner for an entire year until the next challenge. As the municipal administration has noted, the Solco is "the sign that unites generations, an invisible thread that binds those who came before us to those who will carry on this legacy." It is no coincidence that the event is considered an intangible cultural asset of strong identity value for the entire Municipality of Rocca di Mezzo.
The 2026 Gara del Solco in Rocca di Mezzo (AQ) is scheduled for Friday, October 10, 2026, as announced by the Pro Loco on the village's official website. The event renews the oldest and most cherished tradition of the Altopiano delle Rocche: the night-time ploughing competition where teams challenge each other to trace the straightest furrow on the slopes of Monte Rotondo, guided by the beacon lit at San Calvario.
At the moment, the Pro Loco has communicated the date but not yet the detailed programme for the 2026 edition, which will be released later along with the times for the parade, the night competition, and the religious appointments. As every year, the event is organised with the patronage of the Municipality of Rocca di Mezzo and the Sirente-Velino Park.
