The summer devotion of Vitigliano, featuring religious rites, brass bands, and fireworks

In the heart of the Adriatic Salento, the village of Vitigliano—part of the municipality of Santa Cesarea Terme in the province of Lecce—celebrates Saint Aloysius Gonzaga every year to coincide with the saint's liturgical feast day on June 21st. It is an intimate and deeply felt village festival that kicks off the summer season in Vitigliano, serving as a prelude to the major patronal feast held in late August in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Roch.
The core of the festival remains profoundly religious. A solemn mass opens the liturgical celebrations in honor of the young Jesuit saint, followed by a procession carrying the statue of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga through the village streets. The devotional parade winds through the decorated lanes, accompanied by the participation of locals and pilgrims who join the saint on his traditional tour of the community.
Alongside the moments of faith, there is no shortage of conviviality and popular entertainment. The town center is lit up with traditional Salento luminarie (decorative lights), while the main square hosts a traditional brass band concert that keeps the atmosphere alive late into the night. The festivities conclude with a fireworks display, an unmissable highlight of Salento's patronal feasts, which fills the sky over Vitigliano with color and provides the most anticipated moment for the community.
Vitigliano is a small hamlet within the municipality of Santa Cesarea Terme, nestled in the hinterland of the eastern Salento coast in Puglia. The village preserves the authentic atmosphere of rural settlements in the Capo di Leuca area, where religious festivals have marked the community calendar for centuries. The Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Festival is one of those moments when the entire village reconnects with its roots through devotion, music, and shared joy.
Organized by the Vitigliano Festival Committee, the Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Festival is part of the rich calendar of patronal feasts and local food festivals that bring Salento to life during the summer. For those visiting the area—between the thermal baths of Santa Cesarea, the sea caves, and the Adriatic coast—it is a chance to experience a genuine village festival, far from the main tourist circuits, and to discover the popular traditions of this corner of Puglia.
The Vitigliano Festival Committee has not yet released the official program for the 2026 edition of the Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Festival. In keeping with the village's tradition, the usual religious observances—mass and the procession with the saint's statue—are expected, alongside civic events including illuminations, a brass band concert, and a fireworks display. Detailed information will be provided by the organizers and the parish closer to the event date.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Vitigliano, in the municipality of Santa Cesarea Terme (Province of Lecce, Puglia), with religious rites held at the Mother Church and the procession winding through the village streets.
By car: from the SS16 Maglie-Otranto-Santa Cesarea road, you can reach Vitigliano via the provincial roads of the Salento hinterland. The nearest train station is in Maglie (Ferrovie del Sud Est line), from where you can continue by bus or taxi. The nearest airports are Brindisi and Bari.
The festival is held in the public spaces of the village and is free to attend.
