The festival of the pastizz, the signature dish of Rotondella
In Rotondella, a hilltop village in the Metapontino area of the province of Matera, there is a dish that alone tells the story of the community's identity: u' pastizz r'tunnar. It is a crescent-shaped baked product, with a golden crust, filled with pork seasoned with eggs, cheese, parsley, extra virgin olive oil, pepper, and salt. A specialty so deeply rooted that it has obtained the recognition of Traditional Agri-food Product (P.A.T.) and is included in the Ark of Taste by Slow Food.
Organized by the Municipality of Rotondella with the involvement of local associations, the "U' Pastizz R'tunnar" festival takes place in August and transforms the historic center, particularly Corso Garibaldi, into a large open-air workshop. Here, grandmothers and women from agricultural associations demonstrate the preparation of the pastizz using a board and rolling pin, revealing secrets and stories of a craft passed down from generation to generation.
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Rotondella, a village with a characteristic circular shape perched above the Ionian plain. Amidst alleys, panoramic views, and the aroma of freshly baked pastizz, the festival reveals the most authentic soul of eastern Basilicata.
For 2026, the Municipality of Rotondella is again hosting the Sagra U' Pastizz R'tunnar on evenings in August, with a date indicated for August 11th. Along Corso Garibaldi, the traditional workshops led by the village women, tastings of pastizz accompanied by typical Lucanian dishes, and entertainment with folk music and groups will be renewed.
The detailed program will be published by the Municipality of Rotondella closer to the event. The consolidated schedule from recent editions includes, for each evening:
How to get there: Rotondella can be reached from the SS106 Jonica or from the A2 highway, continuing towards Metapontino; the Rotondella-Nova Siri train station is on the Ionian line.
Admission: free entry event; pastizz tastings are paid at participating stands and venues.
Where to get information: the website and Facebook page of the Municipality of Rotondella for updated dates and program.
