The humble sausage of Lucanian tradition celebrates in Gorgoglione
In Gorgoglione, a small village in the province of Matera perched on the hills of inner Lucania, there is a flavour that tells the peasant history of this land: pezzente. A humble sausage in its origins — once prepared with the less noble parts of the pig — but rich in taste and memory, today it is considered a true delicacy and a symbol of the gastronomic identity of the territory. It is dedicated to this that the Sagra del Pezzente is held, one of the most anticipated events of the Gorgoglione summer.
Gorgoglione likes to define itself with self-irony as the village of the mad, for that touch of madness, cheerfulness, and lightheartedness that animates its community. The festival, held in Piazza Zanardelli in the heart of the village, fully reflects this spirit: the tastings of pezzente and traditional peasant dishes are accompanied by live music and entertainment that transform the evening into a great folk festival.
The Sagra del Pezzente is part of a rich summer calendar, curated by the Pro Loco (local tourist board) and the Municipality, which celebrates Lucanian gastronomy and also includes the renowned Sagra dell'Involtino. Visiting Gorgoglione during these days means rediscovering the authentic flavours of the past and experiencing evenings of culture, territory, and conviviality, in a welcoming village immersed in the most genuine Lucania.
The Sagra del Pezzente will be held on August 9, 2026 in Piazza Zanardelli, in the heart of Gorgoglione, as part of the rich Gorgoglione summer calendar. The evening celebrates the pezzente, an ancient sausage of Lucanian peasant tradition, with tastings, live music, and the cheerfulness of the 'village of the mad'.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Gorgoglione in the weeks prior. The evening's structure in Piazza Zanardelli includes:
