Handmade orecchiette pasta from Nova Siri Marina
The Sagra delle Orecchiette - in the Lucanian dialect Sagra di ricch'tell - is one of the most cherished gastronomic festivals in Nova Siri Marina, located on the Ionian coast of the Province of Matera. The absolute stars are the fresh handmade orecchiette pasta, prepared according to tradition and served with various sauces, from the classic tomato sauce to richer seasonings.
The festival is organised by the Parish of Sant'Antonio di Padova in Nova Siri Marina and takes place in early August, coinciding with the feast of the Madonna del Carmine. Alongside the orecchiette, there are sausage sandwiches, watermelon, local red and rosé wine, and other drinks, all in a popular and welcoming atmosphere that attracts both residents and tourists holidaying on the coast.
The evening comes alive with music and group dances in the squares of the Marina, including Piazza Massimo Troisi, where the festivities continue late into the night. It's the perfect opportunity to savour a symbolic dish of Southern Italian cuisine, immersed in the joy of a summer festival that blends devotion, gastronomy, and socialising.
Nova Siri is a hilltop village with ancient origins, located about ten kilometres from the Ionian coast. Its Marina has developed in recent decades as a seaside resort. The festival is one of the events that best showcases this region of Basilicata, where food becomes a community celebration.
