The traditional pasta of Colobraro celebrates on the first Sunday of August
In Colobraro, a village in the Matera region perched above the Sinni Valley, frizzuli are much more than a first course: they are a piece of peasant memory. This handmade pasta, typical of the local tradition, returns to the spotlight every year with its sagra, scheduled for the first Sunday of August.
The event is one of those summer festivals that, in the small Lucanian municipalities, mark the return of emigrants and the peak of the season: you eat the local dish, chat in the streets, and dance until evening. The entire ritual of the village sagra revolves around frizzuli, with women kneading and rolling out the pasta under the eyes of visitors.
Dressed with simple and robust sauces from the Lucanian poor cuisine, frizzuli tell of a gastronomy made of few ingredients and great manual skill. Tasting them in Colobraro, in their original context, means grasping the deep bond between a product and its community.
The sagra is also a good excuse to discover Colobraro, the village that has made its fame as "that village" — linked to bad luck and Lucanian superstition — an identity trait and an original tourist attraction. In August, the local calendar is full of events, from gastronomy to shows, which liven up the streets of the historic center.
In 2026, the Sagra dei Frizzuli returns to Colobraro on the first Sunday of August, in the heart of the Matera village's summer season. The festival celebrates the homemade pasta that is a symbol of the local peasant cuisine, with traditional live preparations, tastings, and evening entertainment in the streets of the center.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced in the coming weeks by the Pro Loco of Colobraro. The typical structure of the sagra includes:
How to get there: Colobraro can be reached by car from the SS 653 of the Valle del Sinni; the nearest airports are in the Policoro-Tursi area.
Admission: village festival with free access; food and drinks to be paid for at the stalls.
Period: first Sunday of August, in the heart of the Lucanian summer season.
