The sacred and classical music festival held in the churches and historic palaces of Lucca
The Sagra Musicale Lucchese is one of the longest-running and most prestigious musical events in Tuscany. Established in 1963, for over sixty years it has brought great sacred and classical music to the most evocative settings in the Municipality of Lucca: the Cathedral of San Martino, the Romanesque churches of the historic center, and the oratories and palaces that hold centuries of history. Promoted by the Associazione per la Sagra Musicale Lucchese in collaboration with the Centro Studi Luigi Boccherini, the festival is a key reference point for rediscovering the rich musical heritage of Lucca, a city that gave birth to Giacomo Puccini and boasts an extraordinary tradition of composers.
Each edition revolves around a spiritual and musicological theme that guides the programming. The concerts range from medieval and Baroque repertoires to Renaissance polyphony, from organ music to solo and choral singing, including unpublished works and premieres resulting from archival research. The Sagra pays great attention to rediscovering forgotten Lucchese composers, returning musical pages to the public that span centuries and enrich the understanding of the city's musical history.
The festival transforms the Province of Lucca into a widespread musical path. Regular venues include the Cathedral of San Martino, the church of San Pietro Somaldi, the church of Sant'Alessandro, the Oratory of the Angeli Custodi, the Sala Maria Luisa and Sala Tobino of the Palazzo Pubblico, as well as the Teatro San Girolamo. Listening to early music in the spaces for which it was often conceived offers a unique acoustic and spiritual experience, in constant dialogue with Lucca's architecture and sacred art.
With its free concerts by reservation, the Sagra Musicale Lucchese is an event deeply rooted in the cultural life of the Municipality and all of Tuscany. It involves soloists, ensembles, choirs, and organists of national and international standing, attracting classical music enthusiasts, tourists, and the faithful alike. The festival represents a precious opportunity to discover Lucca beyond its famous walls: a city that lives music as a profound part of its identity.
The 2026 edition of the Sagra Musicale Lucchese celebrates the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi with the theme «La pace sia con te», taken from the Cantata BWV 158 «Der Friede sei mit dir» by Johann Sebastian Bach. Alongside Bach, the festival rediscovers the Lucchese composer Frediano Matteo Lucchesi (1710–1779) and presents new works by Marco Bargagna. All concerts are free to attend by reservation ([email protected]).
Lucca is easily accessible by train (Lucca station on the Florence–Viareggio line, a few minutes' walk from the historic center) and by car via the A11 Firenze–Mare motorway, Lucca exit. The nearest airport is Galileo Galilei in Pisa, about 30 km away. Almost all concert venues are located within the city walls and are easily reachable on foot.
All Sagra Musicale Lucchese concerts are free to attend by reservation, which must be made via email at [email protected]. We recommend booking in advance to secure your seat.
