'U Gliumuriell' and the White Night of Gorgoglione, a festival of excellence
In Gorgoglione, a village in the province of Matera perched in the inner Lucania region, there is a dish that has become a symbol: 'U Gliumuriell', a roll of spiced lamb meat and offal, cooked over coals or stewed, often served with the typical patate raganate (baked potatoes). It is to this specialty of peasant tradition that the Sagra dell'Involtino (Festival of the Roll) is dedicated, one of the most famous gastronomic festivals in the Matera area.
The value of the festival has also been recognized at an institutional level: on March 18, 2026, in the Sala della Lupa of the Chamber of Deputies in Rome, the Sagra dell'Involtino of Gorgoglione received the 'Sagra d'Eccellenza' (Festival of Excellence) mark from the Ente Pro Loco (Pro Loco Association), alongside the renowned Festa della Bruna of Matera. The Pro Loco has been working for years to achieve recognition for the gliumuriell as a typical traditional dish, aiming for the coveted IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) designation.
The festival coincides with the village's White Night: starting in the evening, Piazza Zanardelli comes alive with food stalls, live music, and DJ sets, transforming Gorgoglione into a grand celebration until the early hours. An event that embodies the spirit of the 'village of the crazy', filled with cheerfulness, authentic flavors, and Lucanian hospitality.
The Sagra dell'Involtino (Festival of the Roll) will be held on August 17, 2026, starting at 8:30 PM in Piazza Zanardelli, coinciding with Gorgoglione's White Night. It celebrates 'U Gliumuriell', the traditional lamb meat and offal roll, in the year the festival received the 'Sagra d'Eccellenza' (Festival of Excellence) mark at Montecitorio (Chamber of Deputies).
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Gorgoglione in the weeks preceding the event. The evening's structure in Piazza Zanardelli includes:
