The patron saint of Garaguso celebrated on August 14th, at the gateway to the Lucanian Dolomites
In Garaguso, a small municipality in the province of Matera nestled in the hills overlooking the striking Lucanian Dolomites, the patron saint, San Gaudenzio Martire, is celebrated on August 14th. The choice of date has a purely agricultural explanation: the saint died in autumn, but the community preferred to move his feast day to mid-summer to avoid interrupting the sowing work in mid-October. Thus, for generations, the village has celebrated its protector in the heart of August, when the town fills with residents and emigrants returning for the holidays.
The devotion to San Gaudenzio has deep roots: the parish church of Garaguso houses some relics of the saint, donated to the community between 1702 and 1794. The central moment of the festival is the procession that accompanies the statue of the patron saint along the streets of the historic center, amidst chants, prayers, and the participation of the entire community.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a small food and wine fair featuring typical local products—from extra virgin olive oil to homemade soppressata and sausages, to goat cheeses—and evening musical performances that liven up the village squares.
Visiting Garaguso means discovering a village with ancient origins, inhabited since the 6th century BC and renowned among archaeologists for the marble model of a small temple with the goddess Persephone, a unique piece in the world now preserved in Potenza. Around the village lie the sabbioni, the characteristic golden cliffs along the Salandrella stream, and the trails leading towards the spires of the Lucanian Dolomites. The festival of San Gaudenzio is the ideal occasion to get to know this authentic corner of the Matera region.
In 2026, Garaguso renews its appointment with its patron saint: on August 14th, the statue of San Gaudenzio Martire will be carried in procession along the streets of the historic center, while the village comes alive with the fair of typical products and music in the square.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced in the preceding weeks by the parish and the Municipality of Garaguso. The traditional structure includes:
